Installation
Today I will use a Samsung HD103SJ HDD. It is rated at 7200 RPM and is a 1 TB bare drive. As with any bare drive, after formatting it in Windows, it worked flawlessly no matter if connected over USB 2.0 or eSATA.
The stand makes it much easier to exchange hard drives and gives the EZ-DOCK a dedicated spot on your desktop. But with the rather heavy 3.5 inch drive it was a little bit wobbly in the upright position, but still sturdy enough to squash any worries about it tipping over during use. You may want to use the EZ-DOCK with the green stand, if you have a nosy cat or child who wants to touch everything.
To test the performance of this EZ-DOCK, we used a single 3.5" Samsung 7200 1 TB hard drive disk. Performance test benchmarks used were HDTach 3.0.4.0 and ATTO.
USB 2.0
The average read speed is sitting at 29.4 MB/s, which is not among the list of the best performing docks that we have seen. We really would have liked to see it perform in the mid 30s. The CPU utilization wasn't on the bad side though at 5%, which is pretty good.
ATTO confirms the read speeds we have seen with HDTach and also gives us a write performance of just under 29 MB/s, which is a bit lower than those of other modern USB 2.0 enclosures as those tend to manage above 30 MB/s read speed.
eSATA
For reference the EZ-DOCK was connected via eSATA. The drive performance is similar to one connected directly via its SATA interface.
