When you get products like this, where to start can be a struggle. Most extreme. Most powerful. Most expensive. Most satisfying? One has to hope. Of course, this laptop might rightfully lay claims to those. Most extreme? Yeah. Most powerful? Very well, might be. It definitely costs a lot. So how do you make it most satisfying? Origin PC has stuck their neck out and said "Just like this!" Enter the EON17-X from Origin PC.

Origin PC's huge EON17-X is a 17.6-inch monster DTR laptop weighing in at 8.4 lbs. Customizable from the CPU on down, this full-fledged desktop-CPU-equipped beast basically takes everything you find in your desktop except the PCIE expansion slots, matches it with a 30-series Max-P RTX mobile GPU, and crams it into a portable chassis with cooling to spare. We're talking 11th generation Intel Core desktop processor, up to an Intel Core I9-11900K. Up to 8 TB of storage space are on tap as well, with support for a Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 drive, along with a 1080p 300 Hz display and Thunderbolt 4, with G-SYNC. A laptop more powerful than most desktops. That's the EON17-X.

Packaging and Contents

If you haven't experienced Origin PC packaging before, it's some serious stuff. That's a real wooden crate, and it's not for show; you pay extra for this shipping option. Inside, you find a more standard cardboard box that has all sorts of goodness inside.

The first thing you find up top is your laptop sleeve, under which are the accessories and T-shirt.

Pull out the tray and we find a mouse pad, and under that is the EON17-X peeking out from behind some thick foam supports.

I really appreciate this foam cradle. It fits the laptop snugly and really makes the shipping materials feel worth it. Everything packed into that wood crate makes for a fairly heavy mass on your doorstep, and it makes an equally heavy impression, so each little bit of it counts.

A plastic sleeve over the lid keeps that scratch-free. Opening the lid, we find a sheet to keep the keys fresh, which explains the keyboard shortcuts and output jacks.

The small black accessories box contains paper manuals, a driver disc, M.2 mounting screws, and thermal pads, along with a small cleaning cloth for the keyboard deck.

The included T-shirt and sleeve are nice touches; an easy way to show you are part of the exclusive Origin PC club.

The mouse pad is really nice; thick and with a woven edge to prevent fraying and splitting. There's is kind of a theme going on here, and I kind of like it? Here's a list of everything I found with my EON17-X:
  • Laptop
  • User guide
  • Battery charger and cable
  • Battery charger and cable
  • M.2 standoffs and pads
  • Cleaning cloth
  • Driver disc
  • T-shirt
  • Mouse pad
  • Laptop sleeve

The included adapter that comes with the Origin PC EON17-X is a 280 W unit from Chicony. It outputs 20 V.

There are two included power supplies. A plastic cage is included so you can stack them, and they still get ample airflow.

The bracket is a nice touch, but a must really, just to simplify things that little bit should you need to carry the EON17-X around to move from one location to the next. Stacking makes cable management a bit better, too.

A Closer Look

The top of my EON17-X has a custom star-scape print, one of many ways you can customize your Origin PC laptop. The print quality is top-notch and adds that bit of awesomeness a system like this really should have, rather than being a plain, boring black brick. The bottom is well vented in just the right places for airflow to the large fans.

The screen is hinged a bit forward from the back edge, giving a good solid feel when you open it up. The screen is firm and doesn't wobble. The keyboard has soft, smooth mechanical keys your fingers can easily glide over.

The left edge features two USB Type-A ports, dual headphone jacks (one is a multi-purpose jack that also does optical audio and mic), and a full-size SD slot. The right edge has a single USB Type-A and two Type-C ports, one of which is capable of outputting video (Thunderbolt 4).

The rear edge features dual power plugs, Ethernet, HDMI, and dual mini-DP connectors. USB 3.0 Type-C rounds it out. The front edge features three indicator LEDs that were constantly lit in my testing since it was mostly plugged in or on. They will turn off when the system is unplugged.

The power button is separate and above the keyboard. The trackpad is large and features separate buttons for left and right clicks.

The rear vents are large. They output a lot of air, and just as much comes out the side vents, too.

The mechanical keyboard features a multi-zone per-key LED lighting interface that is customizable via the provided software. It offers four levels of brightness and several pre-programmed modes, as well as other options.

A look Inside

Inside the EON17-X is a wild mix of black heatpipes, and memory and M.2 SSD slots. The first thing that stands out in mine is the Kingston HyperX SO-DIMMs, an optional part you can choose when configuring yours. You can also choose Corsair Vengeance sticks over the HyperX Impact I have, and several speed bins and sizes are available.

Removing the protective cover/heatsink on one side reveals the two preinstalled drives. I got a 512 MB Corsair drive as my OS drive and Samsung 970 EVO PLUS as my storage drive. I didn't bother removing the cover from the other side since there's nothing under there yet. However, I'll need that added storage space soon.

Two large fans feature deep recesses in the center in order to draw in air, which they definitely do well. Based on the heatpipe arrangement, one is for the CPU and the other for the GPU, although the heatpipes from the CPU do pass over the GPU area.

The CPU in the center is socketed, so you could potentially replace it in the future should you need the upgrade. My unit came with the mighty Intel Core i9-11900K installed, but both 10th and 11th-generation CPUs are options. The heatpipes snake their way from the CPU over the GPU, the MXM card of which the RTX 3060, RTX 3070, and RTX 3080 mobile "Max-P" units are options.
