I have to say I'm really disappointed with this one. I really liked the Kain 100 and expected its bigger brother to be the same thing, just wireless. In theory, the ROCCAT Kain 200 AIMO has everything one would want: a top-tier sensor, low click latency (with the option to go even lower), great materials and buttons across the board, and an excellent scroll wheel, along with a rather unique and highly comfortable right-handed ergonomic shape, and quality mouse feet. When taking a closer look, however, several issues surface.
First, there is the base sensor delay. To put it bluntly, this is unacceptable. No matter if in wired or wireless mode, a base delay of 2–2.5 ms is always present. In wireless mode, the wireless delay is added on top, resulting in a cumulative delay of roughly 5 ms under "best case" conditions. When using higher CPI steps, motion delay can increase to more than 10 ms. Taken on its own, a wireless delay of roughly 2 ms wouldn't be that bad, but coupled with the base sensor delay the latency really adds up. There is little point in having a top-tier sensor such as the PAW3335 if the implementation ends up being this shoddy. It's a shame really since the sensor doesn't perform half-bad apart from that.
Compared to these issues the other flaws pale, although they're still rather annoying. CPI deviation is rather large, and what's worse, it's very difficult to get accurate steps at all. Additionally, the software has its fair share of bugs, even months after release. Going from wired to wireless mode (or the other way around) almost always results in the software either locking up or straight crashing. Rest mode doesn't work at all: After going into sleep mode, the mouse refuses to wake up, only turning it off and on again brings it back to life. Lastly, the update function doesn't seem to be entirely reliable, either.
Not all hope is lost, though. There's still a chance ROCCAT gets around to addressing some of the issues at least in a firmware update. For now, though, I simply cannot recommend the Kain 200 AIMO and would suggest looking at the
Kain 100 or
120 if you're generally interested in the Kain series.
