The Package

ROCCAT ships the Kone[+] in a huge box. The box features a flip-top that allows you to sample the ergonomics of the mouse in stores.


ROCCAT has you covered if you like to play with weights. The Kone[+] ships with four 5 gram weights, which allows you to further tweak the feel of this rodent. Besides that you get the usual driver CD and card that lets you connect with ROCCAT online.

Closer Examination

The design of the ROCCAT Kone[+] mouse has a lot of features to it. Like the original the new [+] version is heavily branded with the ROCCAT-cat logo. Soft-touch is apparently the trend for 2011-2012 PC peripherals and of course the Kone[+] has it. On a mouse it is sort of a good idea since it improves the grip somewhat without introducing major perspiration issues.


ROCCAT has opted for a right hand only design with the Kone[+]. For right handed users it does a good job, but it will be horrible to use for lefties due to the inclusion of left side thumb buttons, and right side slant.


The side button placement is odd. It seems too far back and too high. Using a claw grip, the placement is a little better, but still not perfect.


The scroll wheel area is a bit crammed due to the inclusion on another button just north of the scroll wheel. South of the scroll wheel ROCCAT has placed the DPI controls. Unlike the majority of gaming mouse out there the scroll wheel also has tilt function. The tilt function has sufficient activation force to avoid accidental activations.


Compared to mice like the SteelSeries Sensei and Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 1.1 the Kone[+] is a tad bigger and higher.


Another trend we have seen on the newest generation of gaming mice is the bigger mouse feet. The Kone[+] is no different, the big feet remove wobble and give a more consistent glide.


The back side of the Kone[+] is dominated by the large mouse feet and the weight adjustment system. The sensor is placed in the center of the mouse which makes it handle neutrally.


The entire cable assembly on the ROCCAT Kone[+] is well designed. And behold a wire without a braided cable jacket! Thumbs up to ROCCAT for doing away with the braided cable socks!


Like the old Kone the new [+] model incorporates ROCCATs light strip system. The lights can be set-up just the way you like it in the driver suite, and it can also be turned off if you are not a fan of disco lights in your gaming mouse. That being said the Kone[+] looks quite cool with the lights system on.
