Seasonic PRIME Series 750 W Review

Introduction

We would like to thank Seasonic for supplying the review sample.

Seasonic finally released its Prime Titanium line which thus far consists of three members with capacities ranging from 650 W to 850 W. Two more units will soon be added; a passive unit with a capacity of 600 W and their flagship 1 kW model. According to our sources, the Prime 600 FL Titanium will have an MSRP of around $190, while the Prime 1000 will be more expensive at $260. Street prices will be lower, though, and we will hopefully see other vendors use the Prime platform, which will most likely push prices down even further.

The SSR-750TD is right in the middle of the current Prime family, featuring a moderate capacity of 750 W, which will easily meet the needs of a strong gaming system equipped with two high-end graphics cards and a potent CPU. This PSU also features a fully modular cable design, semi-passive operation, Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) fan, and nothing but quality parts inside, including nothing but Japanese capacitors, both electrolytic and polymer. We had the chance to take a look at the 650 W and 850 W versions and their results were impressive, so we expect the same of the Prime 750.

Finally a Seasonic PSU with Titanium efficiency to meet the similar spec'd Super Flower Leadex platform eye to eye. Without any serious competition, Super Flower has been dominated the Titanium category, which we believe won't be the case anymore, not once all Prime and Focus units have hit the market. Seasonic is ready to unleash a wide portfolio of products on the market, which will surely make all of its competitors uncomfortable. Super Flower's Leadex platform is one of the best, there is no doubt about it, and there was no need for it to be upgraded or redesigned, but with the new Prime platform emerging, Super Flower should probably push its engineers to design an even better platform.

As per usual for a high-end PSU, the SSR-750TD can deliver its full power at up to 50 °C ambient over prolonged periods of time. All necessary protection features are also present, and there is an FDB fan with a lifetime of 70,000 hours at 40 °C, at least on paper. 70.000 hours might look low compared to the specifications of other FDB fans which usually last well over 100,000, but Seasonic does mention the ambient at which these 70,000 hours apply where other OEMs do not. As you can imagine, the HA13525M12F-Z will last much longer at lower temperatures.

The +12V rail is quite strong, but the minor rails look weak. However, 100 W maximum combined power output on the minor rails is more than enough to cover a modern system's needs. After all, the minor rails can easily deliver much more than these 100 W combined should the need arise since their OCP thresholds are set at over 25 A.

There are enough cables and connectors to cover the PSU's capacity efficiently. All cables are also long enough to avoid any problems during installation into larger cases. However, SATA and peripheral connectors could afford to be further apart to make things easier.

Since this PSU features a single +12V rail, we do not have anything to comment on when it comes to its power distribution.

Packaging

The large box has an interesting design, and the most interesting part on its front is an icon for the 10-year warranty Seasonic provides with this product.

On one of two sides are the technical and power specifications tables, while Seasonic lists the PSU's most notable features on the back, using several paragraphs to do so.

Contents

Seasonic used packing foam to protect the PSU during shipping. They also put it inside a nice velvet bag.

The accessories box contains all modular cables and the AC power cord. The rest of the bundle includes the user's manual, quick installation guide, several Velcro straps, zip ties, a set of screws, Seasonic case badge and Seasonic sticker. All in all, the bundle is worthy of such an expensive product.
