Value and Conclusion

  • The Speed-Link Illuminated Dark Metal Keyboard sells for just under 65€, which makes it fairly expensive, compared to other, very similar Speed-Link offerings.
  • Really sturdy with Aluminum top cover
  • Very compact
  • Standard numpad
  • Even backlighting
  • No software required for Windows XP
  • Multimedia buttons
  • Internet navigation keys
  • "Wake", "Sleep" & "Power" functionality
  • Thin and quiet keys
  • All function keys are still present
  • A tad bit pricey
  • Backlight only illuminates key silluettes not their function
  • No progammable buttons
  • No need for software in Windows XP not mentioned anywhere
  • Adjusting to new layout may take a while
Considering the price you may wonder why it is so expensive. Similar offerings from Speed-Link with semi-transparent keys which can clearly be seen at night and also feature a two port USB 2.0 hub sell for less than the Illuminated Dark Metal Keyboard. The high quality construction does add to the overall value and makes it a bit easier to spend that much money on a keyboard and the even blue backlight coupled with the all black color looks gorgeous. The combination of backlight and keyboard color is exclusive to this variant, which means that you are paying for looks as well. If you really want this and do not mind spending the extra money on the Illuminated Dark Metal Keyboard, you will not be dissapointed by the feel and functionality of the input device.
You should expect a slight learning curve to remember where all the usual function keys have been placed at. Others not wanting to spend that much, but still want real backlighting and who do not care about looks so much, should consider the other metal keyboards from Speed-Link.
