Packaging
Just like its wired predecessor, the Rival 650 comes in rather premium-looking packaging. The thin outer cardboard has the usual technical specifications and render images printed on and basks in SteelSeries' new colors and artwork. Below this layer is a thicker black cardboard box with some hype-up text gunning at making you want to game ASAP. Once opened, the Rival 650 is front and center. There are also a set of weights, USB cable, and the wireless receiver and its cable extender in the smaller box below the mouse, and of course a quick-start guide in a slot at the front of the box.
Shape
The shape doesn't surprise because the Rival 650 has the exact same dimensions and shell design as the Rival 600. This makes it a rather big right-handed ergonomic mouse with quite a lot going on at first glance. There are a number of ledges and lines that kind of break up the consistency of the shell, but these cannot really be felt while using the mouse—at least I didn't. The shape is rather big and bulky, so it will mostly suit users with hands a tad above average in size.
The mouse is built for right-handed users, and the right side of the shell is slanted, just like with many other similarly designed products. The middle of the left side panel curves inward slightly, which helps with picking up the mouse and maintaining a stable grip. The main buttons feature some rather well-defined grooves as well, which helps with putting your fingers into a comfortable position.
Moving on to the measurements, the Rival 650 is 131 mm (5.16") long, which can be considered rather long among gaming mice. The total width is 69 mm (2.72"), but the actual width at which it is gripped is approximately 62 mm (2.44"). The total height is 43 mm (1.69"), and the hump is centered. With these dimensions, the mouse will mainly be good for palm grippers with hands that are larger than 17 cm (6.69"), but that is entirely up to personal preference, and others might find other grip styles and hand sizes perfectly suitable.
