Power Consumption
Let's check now how much power the DS213+ needs in sleep, idle, hibernation mode, and during heavy throughput.
We use two professional power analyzers, a Prova WM-01 and a GW Instek GPM-8212, for all power-consumption measurements.
Sleep, Idle and Load
Power consumption was very low in all cases and reaches the low levels Synology claims for this unit. 25.2 W consumption during heavy throughput is nothing less than amazing for a dual-core NAS.
Power Consumption in Standby and Hibernation Modes
Vampire power or phantom load is the amount of power that a device consumes when it is switched off while still plugged into the power grid. The phantom load should, according to the ErP Lot 6 2010 directive, be below 1W; the future 2013 directive lowers this threshold to 0.5W.
The DS213+ misses the ErP LoT 6 2010 directive by 0.1 W, and the new directive limiting vampire power to 0.5 W will take effect in a few months. The NAS does, however, have a hibernation mode in which energy consumption is very low.
