Audio Station

Audio Station is a web-based audio application. It gives you access to Internet radio or the music stored on your NAS, and allows you to play music over your computer and iOS/Android device. Audio Station also supports streaming to Bluetooth and AirPlay devices. Its embedded music player even supports the creation of a personal library for each individual account.

Video Station

Synology says Video Station to be an ideal organizer for your movie collections, TV Shows, home videos, and various TV recordings. Use Video Station to watch videos on your PC, DLNA or AirPlay devices, and iOS/Android/Windows smartphones and tablets. You can even create custom libraries if its default libraries don't cover your needs, and you can assign them access permissions. You also have the ability to live stream and record digital TV programs by using a suitable USB DTV dongle.

We tried various file types with the Video Station and found it to be incompatible with several multimedia file types, including M2TS. Playback with very high bit-rate files (MKV with >20 Mbps) also wasn't smooth, especially in "heavy-duty" scenes. If you want to learn more about the transcoding capabilities of the DS214se, you had better take a look at this article.

We also included a few screenshots of the system resources page while we ran a high bit-rate sample of Transformers over Video Station. You will notice a few CPU-utilization spikes that coincide with some lost frames and breaks during playback.

Photo Station

Install the Photo Station app via Package Center and you are ready to enjoy its features.

Photo Station is an online photo album with an integrated blog. It makes sharing photos and videos over the Internet a breeze. The package also offers support for all popular social networking sites, and you can browse photos saved to your NAS via a major browser or mobile device. Photo Station supports all popular image formats and most video formats.

When you upload photos or videos for use with Photo Station or Media Server, thumbnails will be created for a better browsing experience. You can set the thumbnail quality and monitor how far along a conversion is, although such a conversion can take a while since the CPU isn't that strong. Running a conversion while other services are taking place will definitely also reduce the responsiveness of those services.

Cloud Station

Cloud Station allows you to easily synchronize your files across multiple systems. Files will then be locally available via web and Cloud Station folders. The maximum file size for synchronized files is 10 GB and there is also a mobile application, DS cloud, to synchronize files with mobile devices.

Download Station

Download Station is a web-based download application. It allows you to download files via BT, FTP, HTTP, NZB, and eMule, without the need of a client PC. The files are directly put into a specified NAS folder.

Download Station allows you to download files off various file-hosting sites. You can also search for torrent files through the system's default search engines, or those you add through the BT search function.

File Station

File Station gives DSM users access to shared NAS folders over the Internet. Running two or more File Stations at the same time also allows you to manage all DiskStation data by dragging and dropping between different File Stations.

As you can see in the screenshots above, File Station provides you with a lot of options.
