Trays & HDDs

Synology sent us a couple IronWolf Seagate HDDs (ST2000VN004), which look to be ideal for surveillance systems. These HDDs have specifically been designed for NAS servers were increased reliability is key, thanks to their AgileArray technology. The high capacity IronWolf and all Pro models are equipped with RV (Rotational Vibration) sensors, which Seagate says to mitigate vibrations in multi-bay NAS enclosures for consistent performance and reliability.

The IronWolf line consists of several model with capacities ranging from 1-10 TB, while the IronWolf Pro line consists of only three models with raw capacities of 6 TB, 8 TB, and 10 TB. The provided warranty is three years long for the plain IronWolfs and five for the Pro models. If you are a home user, the plain models will fully suffice, but you should consider the Pro models for more demanding usage scenarios. You could even go with the Enterprise Capacity line for even more reliability with mission critical applications since it boasts an impressive two million Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF).

As expected for a NAS of this price category, the trays are made of plastic instead of metal, which is definitely more durable. These trays also don't feature any anti-vibration materials.
