The Package
UE's styling extends all the way to the packaging. The big cylindrical boxes are somewhat of a trademark for BOOM speakers.
Bundle-wise, you get what is needed and nothing more. Just like the original, the BOOM 2 comes with a charger and cable.
Closer Examination
The UE BOOM 2 is available in a lot of crazy color combinations. The color combination pictured is dubbed "Tropical" and definitely is one of the flashier BOOM 2 choices. UE has a habit of extending the color selection after a product has hit the market, and they have already added one crazy custom design called "Rabbit Eye Movement," which makes the Tropical color combination seem totally ordinary.
The basic design has not changed much from the latest revision of the newest BOOM to the BOOM 2. At the speaker's bottom is a small cover that acts as a seal for the USB and mini-jack inputs. The cover is probably part of the reason why the BOOM 2 has an IPX7 rating, which means it will survive 30 minutes of submersion in water.
Like the original, the new one features two LEDs on top; an on/off indicator and another that blinks once the device is ready for Bluetooth pairing.
Grab the BOOM 2 off the ground and slap it twice on top, and it will skip to the next track. One slap stops or resumes playback. This feature is quite neat and works surprisingly well.
The big thumb-friendly buttons of the BOOM's design made it to the BOOM 2. These buttons are easy to reach and even allow you to check on the charge level. Press the two volume buttons at once and the speaker will tell you how much of the charge is left.
UE sticks with the fabric cover for their BOOMs and rightfully so. They look great and are quite durable as the fibers used withstand abrasion and dirt really well and can be cleaned.
