Verbatim Store'n'Go for Mac 500 GB USB 3.0 & FW 800 Review

Performance

Firewire 800

The Verbatim Store'n'Go 500GB for Mac manages to deliver very good performance when connected to a LaCie Firewire 800 controller card. While it does not manage to be as fast as the internal drive, Apple users should see a definitive performance boost compared to USB 2.0 connectivity.

USB 3.0

When using USB 3.0 the internal drive becomes the limiting factor, as HD Tach shows a nice downward spiral as it moves toward the outer edge of the disk platters. While read performance is good, write speed is quite slow. Seems like this is due to a bad choice of drive used, as there is no straight line in the test run.

USB 2.0

With USB 2.0 the drive manages to push the limits of the interface in terms of read performance, but falls a bit short in terms of write speeds. This is due to the interface/chip within the Verbatim Store'n'Go drive.
