Value and Conclusion

  • The Verbatim Store'n'Go 500GB for Mac sells for 70-75 Euros (including HDD) depending on color.
  • More affordable than USB 3.0 & Firewire 800 variants from Freecom or LaCie
  • Good Firewire 800 performance
  • Good USB 3.0 performance
  • Very good USB 2.0 read speeds
  • Excellent build quality
  • Available in black or white
  • USB 3.0, Firewire 800 and USB power cable included
  • Time Machine compatible
  • Price premium over drives only featuring USB 3.0 interface
  • Only 500 GB variant available
  • Black is the most affordable, all other colors cost more
  • Thunderbolt is fast approaching
Well, there are very few 2.5 inch drives with both USB 3.0 and Firewire 800 on the market. Of the ones I could find, the Verbatim was by far the most affordable. That said, it would have been nice to have the choice of different capacities besides just 500 GB. In terms of performance, the drive delivers benefits when using both Firewire 800 or USB 3.0 when compared to USB 2.0, but does not manage to tickle the most out of either interface. You will find pure USB 3.0 drives that manage to push data to the drive much faster than is the case with the Verbatim Store'n'Go unit. The same goes for the Firewire 800 interface. In the end, with savings of well over 25 Euros to the next cheapest variant from LaCie, these shortcomings lose some considerable weight. So the Verbatim Store'n'Go 500GB for Mac works as advertised, while not being the speed demon but at a very sweet price point for such a device.
