Overclocking
The overclocking results listed in this section were achieved with the default fan and voltage settings as defined in the VGA BIOS. Please note that every single sample overclocks differently, which is why our results here can only serve as a guideline for what you can expect from your card.
The maximum stable clocks of our card are 1240 MHz core (27% overclock) and 1680 MHz memory (12% overclock).
GPU overclocking potential is very good and reaches clock levels that are comparable to full Tahiti GPUs, showing that AMD did not cheap out with the packaging of its different chip, and that VTX did not take the low-cost route with their PCB design.
We have no comparison table in this review because we don't have anything to compare the card to. With this card not being based on the Pitcairn GPU, it makes little sense to compare overclocking potential to other HD 7870s. Comparing it to the HD 7900 makes no sense either, given that card is in a different performance class.
Using these clock frequencies, we ran a quick test of
Battlefield 3 to evaluate the gains from overclocking.
Actual 3D performance gained from overclocking is 5.5%.
