When charging, the embedded LED in the top of the unit lights up red and then turns off once the battery is full. During use, it also lights up white when booting and then gently pulsates when the battery is running out. Speaking of the built-in power source, it takes around 2 hours and 15 minutes to charge fully using the included power supply. Opposite of that, playing a video at default settings drains it in just 55 minutes, which is really unfortunate and limiting. Other portable devices with a built-in battery manage 2 or more hours, which is enough to watch a full movie. We tried this cycle twice and it was nearly identical with a <1 minute difference before the Wemax Go Pro shut down.
In terms of noise, the Wemax Go Pro managed to stay nice and quiet at just 37.8 dBA at a distance of 30 cm, which is better than other units we have reviewed.
The pre-installed Aptoide TV does not bear any surprises as it is meant to give you a TV-friendly interface alongside an alternative app store to access Netflix, among other things. It feels a little redundant since Wemax also includes the GetApps app store, which itself is an alternative to get such apps, but with better integration into its own Wemax Launcher as any app you download here will get its own tile on the main menu, just like the Netflix one mentioned previously. Lastly, the Firefox browser is a nice touch, as Android TV or Google TV don't offer a browser through Google Play Store, for example.
The music player is the same as on the Wemax Nova. It will display the song information alongside a little animation and allows you to turn off the screen while continuing to pipe audio through the speakers.
Most smart projectors, even those running genuine Android TV, lack the ability to install the official Google App Store version of Netflix. This also holds true for the Wemax Go Pro, but thanks to the GetApps app store, acquiring and using the alternative Netflix app is intuitive and just as seamless. You simply install it from the store and it will show up on the Wemax Launcher menu for you to utilize with the press of a button. Naturally, the only downside is that the Netflix app interface caters to touch screens first and foremost.
Watching the immortal Tom Cruise in the trailer of the always upcoming movie Top Gun Maverick, the image quality is vastly superior to that of the non-Pro Go variant. Besides the obvious of having four times the pixel count, the colors, brightness, and contrast feel much more balanced, resulting in enjoyable image quality. At times, there is still the overly warm color temperature, but it is not disturbingly noticeable.
YouTube is accessible either through Aptoide TV or by installing it directly using GetApps, which again speaks to the fact that Aptoide TV is somewhat unnecessary. Watching cartoons like Rick & Morty makes for a sharp and nicely saturated visual experience as well.
Gaming should also be possible with the Wemax Go Pro. While we did not measure input lag, Death Stranding scenes are well lit and detailed on the 50" screen, making the Wemax Go Pro a functional option when wanting to take a console on the road.
Nighttime performance obviously trumped the already useful lit up environment. To create a 100", keystoned image, we had to place the Wemax Go Pro around 277 cm from the fixed frame ALR screen. The A 9 section luminance benchmark resulted in 510–510 lumens across the white 100" test image in an otherwise completely dark room. Considering Wemax mentions that the Wemax Go Pro can provide up to 600 ANSI lumens, that seems just about right.
