Value and Conclusion

  • The Zalman ZM-K650WP costs $26.99 from retailers, including Newegg.com and Amazon.com in the USA, and that as of the date of the review.
  • Great value for the money
  • Comprehensive waterproof design inside and out
  • Dedicated volume control and Windows lock key
  • Aluminum stiffening plate results in no flexing
  • Mediocre quality stock keycaps
  • Tactile feedback is near useless as you will bottom out anyway
I hinted at the low price point multiple times in the review, but kept it to the very end so readers would not form an opinion one way or the other. The Zalman ZM-K650WP is inexpensive, but not cheap. It is built well, has had a lot of thought put into its water-proofing, and offers enough to where this really should be the minimum standard for PC enthusiasts who do not care for mechanical switches or simply can not afford them.

The cons mentioned are not deal breakers either, and I dare say the stock keycaps are on the same level as some $150+ keyboards also. To be honest, there is not much I can say to detract from the keyboard given that price point. Perhaps the biggest competition, aside from the bundled OEM keyboard that may have come with an office PC tower, would be the no-name $30 mechanical keyboards, but with no personal experience, I can not say whether those are worth the money or not.

Zalman had to do something to get people to pay attention to a membrane keyboard in this day and age where mechanical keyboards have flooded the market. The waterproof feature will also benefit those with a dusty environment, and those who would not mind the snack by the computer. In a more professional setting, there are potential commercial users working at construction sites, warehouses, and general outdoor environments where an inexpensive waterproof design will be worth it. In context of this all, I dare say Zalman has done what they had to get said attention and more.
