Will we ever really know why Sapphire Rapids was so delayed? I heard that Intel had to release new steppings… but why?

They had a lot of work doing updates, optimisations and accelerations in order to make SPR more competitive against Zen 3.

Delayed so long that now the zen4 Genoa 800 Lbs gorilla is here… trying to eat as much market share as it can. I wonder if intel will ever publish a technological piece on sapphire rapids explaining the engineering challenges faced along the way, and the solutions/steppings that needed to be taped out.

Clearly price optimisation was never a concern. 56 core Xeon is dearer than 96 core epyc Genoa.

These prices mean nothing. Xeons are always priced higher yet even after $4.2B of revenue, Intel had no profit from datacentre business last quarter. Q4 could be much worse as Genoa is there and Sapphire rapids will be released from Jan10, if I remember correctly.
