Insiders Predict Slimmer Profiles on 2024 iPad Pro OLED Models

Mid-January reportage indicated that LG and Samsung plants in South Korea had commenced construction of next-gen Apple iPad OLED parts—while expert analysis has predicted a second quarter launch of 11 and 13-inch "Pro" tablet models. Omdia—an independent analyst and consultancy firm—has compiled its Apple field research into a forecasted roadmap of various portable products. Company analysts believe that: "LG Display (LGD) and Samsung Display (SDC) are preparing to mass-produce RGB tandem stack and Hybrid OLEDs from their half-Gen 6 fabs. Apple also plans to launch the MacBook Pro with OLED displays in 2026. BOE, LGD, and SDC are preparing their fab investments to produce RGB tandem stack and hybrid OLEDs at half-Gen 8.7 fabs."

9to5Mac's insider network detected whispers of possible Apple tablet physical profile adjustments—suggesting that a larger next-gen iPad Air is in the pipeline, alongside a thinner iPad Pro design update: "(we) first reported last year that Apple has been working on two new versions of the iPad Air, codenamed J507 and J537. While one of these models will look pretty much like the current iPad Air, the other will have a larger display. If true, this will be the first time Apple will offer the iPad Air in two different sizes. And according to our sources, this larger iPad Air will have essentially the same dimensions as the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro, suggesting that the screen size will also be almost identical. The smaller iPad Air is unlikely to have any significant design changes."
The report proposes that 2024 iPad Pro models will be thinner courtesy of rumored OLED panels possessing fewer layers when compared to equivalent LCD units.

Here are speculative product dimensions, side by side with existing model measurements:
  • 11-inch iPad Pro (current): 247.6 mm x 178.5 mm x 5.9 mm
  • 11-inch iPad Pro (new): 249.7 mm x 177.5 mm x 5.1 mm
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro (current): 280.6 mm x 214.9 mm x 6.4 mm
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro (new): 281.5 mm x 215.5 mm x 5.0 mm
  • 12.9-inch iPad Air (new): 280.6 mm x 214.9 mm x 6.0 mm

Dumb, I'd rather have a bigger battery and it last longer. Or better cooling so it could boost higher.

I mean a giant ipad like the 12.9" is just going to be sitting on a holder anyway, and only rarely picked up. I can't imagine really enjoying a 12.9" ipad holding it, regardless of how slim it is or not.

Hum, so still no "normal" IPad that doesn’t cost 1k with oled until 2026…

I have a 12.9" iPad Pro (2018 model) and IMO its a product that does spend a lot of time in the hand. If I want a more or less desktop experience I can just use a PC or a Mac. Since the 2018 model can't take full advantage of an external monitor its not the best for docking. Stage Manager works on an external display but the full feature set isn't available on on an iPad of this vintage.

The iPad Pro is a decent product and given that my 2018 model is still performing well and feeling fairly powerful after 5 going on 6 years going for the higher end may yield a longer life for the product. Price is a possible issue though and adding OLED seems to be making an already expensive product even more expensive. If Apple made a new iPad Pro without the OLED and M3 SoC at more reenable prices then I'd go for that.

I mean an entry level price of ~$1500 USD for the 11" because of OLED is a bit beyond the pale,...

The iPads pro is pretty much why Apple will never make a proper convertible MacBook imo. They are the only one so far that could convince devs to make serious apps for their tablets. And there's always sidecar.

"Only we know what's best for our customer", sums up pretty well why I don't have an ipad even though I'd like one and why i have 0 apple products

Some time ago, there was a company that would convert new MacBooks into tablet form factor. Seems unnecessarily IMO. There are some pro apps as you pointed out but not nearly enough. The iPad, especially the Pro version, is powerful enough for pro apps though and Apple will likely keep making them so the incentive is there for devs.

I've Galaxy tab S9 ultra, 14,6" OLED and it is so great, I'm using it at least 2-3h a day to read comics. Could be a 1 inch wider and it would be perfect.
+ when travelling a pad that large is so great for watching movies, documentaries and news at more than 1.
+ larger screen means better split screen experience.
+ Oled bring narrower edges, so the overall size of the device is reduced in comparison.
+ 700gr 5.5mm thickness is excellent for transportation compared to most laptops.
+ nowadays those pads have all the APPs to do remote work
+ these pads can be used as secondary screen

so yeah definitely those big size pads are great products. expensive but great.
