So, out of the box the deck has only one partition ?.. with the OS and it's the same partition on which games have to be copied ?..

Valve is readying dualboot (windows & linux).

Single-boot has always been the cheapest option. No dual-boot, no room for Microsoft to claim license fees. Even when Valve releases a dual-boot option, you'll still need to supply your own Windows key.

There are instruction sets floating around the web, if you don't want to wait for the "official" release.

i wish valve would just focus on steam os only, steam deck still can't do rts games well, and it never will be able to, thats mouse and keyboard territory. same with lot of blizzard games, AAA games, and so on, pc only for me. but there are many many games that make steamos shine in this form factor, and those are the games im going to play on Deck

i guess its nice to have options, but it does worry me they are spreading their selves to thin so to speak... i mean if they just had their entire staff work on steamos instead of windows dual boot steamos could even be that much better imo

yeah I am 100% buying the glossy version tomorrow. if my steam deck lcd doesn't sell here on tpu and it doesn't look like it will as my thread is crickets so far... then I guess I will just keep both and if I get a gf someday we can play stardew valley and other co-op games in bed together - couples who play together, stay together

or thats what my official playstation magazine always told me when I was in school. we'll see

I see little reason to upgrade. Even a hypothetical Steam Deck 2 wouldn't be worth it. I mostly play low power games with 6+ hours battery life. Going from 6+ to 10+ hours of battery life wouldn't be life changing. Nor do I need more performance. The upgrade itch is there but is easily ignored.

Why would Valve set up dual boot by default? Valve is very invested in becoming independent of Microsoft. I have seen no indication valve will install windows on the Deck by default.

to be honest with you, I feel the same way. all these reviewers don't realize the preview update for LCD Steam Deck makes it so my Deck actually has really good colors now... honestly most people don't realize this, I thought original Deck looked good before preview update, not going to lie I wanted a little more for my screen, but after the preview update, its so damn good that I honestly am not sure $600 warrants the OLED upgrade)... really im just upgrading for the OLED... i don't know what to do. bleh. and I am similar, a Deck 2 doesn't even make sense, I have so much backlog I am enjoying on my regular Deck that use literally 5 watts to run at 60 fps or 30 fps... i had so much fun this year playing on Deck. maybe I should wait on Deck 2 and skip the OLED, I can't decide :(

Deck 2 does make sense to me in a couple years though, because a really powerful APU would be great, could dial it down to 2 watts for games that use 7 watts or so now, and then that will scale I hope, so I will be able to play AAA games like cyberpunk 2077 at 1280x800 native at 90 fps 90hz (but we all know they are going to ruin this with a 1080p screen making it more like 60 fps max if lucky on medium settings. i just wish they would keep same screen, keep same everything, just give us a 2nm or 3nm APU for Deck 2, but I know they won't do that. sigh.

and since 1080p will be the native or 1200p w.e they decide of Deck 2, its going to be that much harder to run games, negating the benefit of a better APU, I want solid 60 fps or 90 in the Deck OLED's case for all of my games, not just a big chunk of my indie backlog. I am ok with that for now though.

These two points perfectly summarise why I'm happy to continue using my original deck and ignore the upgrade itch.

The only thing I'd like in a refresh would be a larger screen; Most games are fine on 7", but there is actually room for an 8" IPS screen without changing the chassis. I'm not sure I even care about higher resolution, since 800p is fine at 8" and once you add in temporal AA you really can't see the pixels unless you're actively looking for them or bringing the deck up to your face. (I'm thinking of 8.4" 720p screens I've seen in the past).

The reduced power demands of the 6nm silicon and longer battery life are advantages only for AAA PC gaming. It's impressive that the Deck can actually play AAA PC games, but it's far from the best use-case of the Deck and I doubt many people really buy the Deck for 2023 AAA releases.

have you tried preview update yet? the colors are honestly much nicer now, and you can tweak them to your liking as i showed in previous pictures in this thread. yea, the big youtubers just don't get it, LCD actually looks really good now with preview update. 600 bucks is a lot of money. i might not buy one honestly. fuck. OLED is my dream but still, original Deck looks great to me

Yet AAA games are some of the most popular to be played on the Deck in perticular.

I didn't tell default, it told readying.
I don't think I understand what you mean by readying then. We have been able to dual boot SteamOS and Windows from day 1. Valve isn't about limiting what people can do with their own hardware.

The only 2023 AAA title in that list is BG3, and that's not actually particularly demanding, since it's using the 2018 Divinity engine and has very low system requirements (GTX 970 and a decade-old quad-core).

I've certainly helped with those stats, my Deck has over 200 hours shared between Dave, Brotato, and Elden Ring.

Was able to grab an OLED version today :) Can't wait to knock out some games on my backlog and try out emulation.

I wasn't sold on the OG steam deck, mostly I wanted to make sure Valve didn't lose interest like they did with their steam machines. I think they've had great success with this.

I almost went with the cheaper LCD version but decided after upgrading the memory the difference in cost was only going to be about ~$150 ($350 + $50 for 500GBnvme vs $550 for OLED) and for a much better screen and longer battery life, the cost was worth it.

I'm excited!

Edit: Fix pricing

I guess "2023" was a qualifier. I certainly would not have expected BG3, Eldenring, GTA5, RDRII, Fallout, or Cyberpunk to be especially enjoyable on the Deck. I would think they were better enjoyed on a desktop.

about to send a message to cancel my steam deck OLED order, playing my og Deck right now, and honestly im happy with it. i just really don't see the need for an upgrade until they get a better APU. the preview update with display at 8000k and srgb two notches to the right, i mean it looks damn good honestly. I just don't think I can justify damn near 600 bucks for it. also I don't use wifi on my deck, i use my type c to ethernet cable adapter, and it downloads games faster than even wifi6e deck OLEDs do... so meh thats not really an issue for me cause i would just use the wire with the deck OLED too, then go into offline mode when done download and updating my games, thats what I have done since I got my Deck, works out great for me.

speakers sound great to me, i have the improved fan dampener since my Deck is "more recent than launch model" fan noise isnt bad at all and temps are great on mine.

so realistically, I am literally only paying 600 bucks for the OLED screen, and as badly as I want it, my current screen looks damn fine since the preview update improved srgb by close to 30 or 40%, i just see no reason to drop 600 on this. damn, really wanted to I did, but yeah just going to use my current Deck until Deck 2. if i made more money I wouldn't mind owning both, but yeah its redundant as fuck for me to have two Decks.

loaded up ori and the blind forest just now, and it looks vibrant and has a great white point, honestly impresses me. so yeah no, sending the message now to cancel it. oh well. Deck 2 will be my upgrade in 2-3 years, and thats fine. I should be thankful i have this and i like it and use it so much, so its all good

about to send a message to cancel my steam deck OLED order, playing my og Deck right now, and honestly im happy with it. i just really don't see the need for an upgrade until they get a better APU. the preview update with display at 8000k and srgb two notches to the right, i mean it looks damn good honestly.

I should be thankful i have this and i like it and use it so much, so its all good
Really interesting story with a lot of plot twitst by reading all your message :D
But yeah, the upgrade is really nice for news owner by I don't think it's worth it if you already have a lcd deck. Valve will still be behind their product (not like oculus with my rist s, updated for 1 year or so) and it will keep being better, just as shown in the last preview update. I just hope it will reach beta soon as I want to stay on a more "stable realease" but I want new feature early.

its out now for stable release, they just updated the stable release today with the color improvements, let me know how you like my settings and what your overall impressions are.

When you do, just remember to go to settings > Display > change display settings, trying my settings of 8000k white point and two notches over from the new rgb slider.

also, you don't want it to be too bright or dark otherwise the black levels will suffer, about 60-70% brightness is perfect on mine. hopefully these numbers give you a starting point anyway.
