NVIDIA Announces the GeForce RTX 40 SUPER Series Graphics Cards

NVIDIA today gave its GeForce RTX 40-series "Ada" a midlife refresh targeting the higher end of its product stack, with the new GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER, GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER. The new RTX 4080 SUPER replaces the current RTX 4080, which will gradually be phased out of the market. The new RTX 4070 Ti SUPER does the same to the current RTX 4070 Ti. The RTX 4070 SUPER, however, will coexist with the current RTX 4070, albeit at a slight price premium. The RTX 4070 SUPER and RTX 4070 Ti SUPER are both being recommended by NVIDIA for maxed out 1440p gaming with full ray tracing; while the RTX 4080 SUPER is for those who want to max out gameplay at 4K with full ray tracing. The RTX 4070 SUPER and RTX 4070 Ti SUPER should still very much be capable of 4K gaming and more than acceptable frame rates, especially given the latest DLSS 3 Frame Generation and its proliferation among new AAA titles.

NVIDIA is giving the three new graphics card SKUs a staggered launch spread across January 2024. The RTX 4070 SUPER should be available to purchase on January 17, at a starting price of $599, which was the original MSRP of the RTX 4070. After this launch, the RTX 4070 slides down a bit to $549 while remaining in the product stack. Things get interesting higher up the stack. The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, which goes on sale on January 24, is priced at $799, while the current RTX 4070 Ti is being retired from the product stack. The remaining RTX 4070 Ti cards should be up at slightly discounted prices.

Community Mod Brings FSR 3 Frame Generation to Cyberpunk 2077

AMD last week released the FSR 3 source code to public through its GPUOpen initiative, and the modding community wasted no time in bringing the feature to popular games such as "The Last of Us: Part 1," and now, "Cyberpunk 2077." CD Projekt Red will probably bring official FSR 3 support to the game at some point, but for those who can't wait, there's DLSS3-to-FSR3 by Nukem9. Put simply, this is a DLSS 3 DLL that you replace your game's DLSS 3 library file with; which gets the game to use FSR 3 instead of DLSS 3 Frame Generation.

The latest version of DLSS3-to-FSR3 adds "Cyberpunk 2077" support, and there's an extensive guide written by AndreasLyUs on Reddit, on how to integrate it with your "Cyberpunk 2077" installation, so you can enable FSR 3. Neegzm on YouTube, published a video review on how FSR 3 mods for "Cyberpunk 2077" look and perform compared to DLSS 2. You can expect a frame-rate jump from 25 FPS with DLSS 2 Quality to 47 FPS with FSR 3 enabled. The FSR 3 mod should be particularly useful for those on older NVIDIA RTX 30-series "Ampere" GPUs, or all Radeon RX 6000 and RX 7000 GPUs. Those on RTX 40-series can just take advantage of the official DLSS 3 Frame Generation support to see comparable frame-rates.

ExtraSS Framework Paper Details Intel's Take on Frame Generation

With both NVIDIA and AMD having the ability to nearly double frame-rates in games using frame generation technologies such as DLSS 3 and FSR 3, Intel Graphics couldn't be too far behind. The company is taking a significantly different approach than the other two GPU makers. In a research paper titled "ExtraSS Framework Details Intel's Take on Frame Generation," Intel provides an overview of how ExtraSS works, and its obvious advantage over DLSS 3 and FSR 3—latency.

ExtraSS is a technology that relies on frame extrapolation, instead of interpolation on FSR 3 and DLSS 3. In interpolation, the software uses past- and future frames to guess an in-between frame, using motion vectors and temporal data. This adds latency, which is why NVIDIA and AMD rely on technologies such as Reflex and Anti-Lag+ to mitigate it. There's no such technological problem to solve with ExtraSS. On the other hand, generating frames entirely using past frames (i.e. extrapolation in the literal sense of the word), can result in artifacts and ghosting. Intel intends to solve this using a new warping method, and AI. ExtraSS should come in particularly handy as Intel is betting big on giving its processors powerful iGPUs, such as the Xe-LPG powering the Core Ultra "Meteor Lake," while its Arc "Alchemist" GPUs remain a generation older than what NVIDIA and AMD have in the dGPU market. Intel hopes to launch its next-generation "Battlemage" discrete GPUs in 2024.

NVIDIA DLSS Comes to Eight New Games This Week

NVIDIA announces that as many as eight new games get support for their DLSS performance enhancement this week, as the company celebrates RTX 500, the milestone of having over 500 games and software being part of its RTX ecosystem. This week, NVIDIA is announcing that DLSS 3 Frame Generation is coming to the hotly anticipated e-sports title, "The Finals," and "SCUM," a prison riot survival and escape title that somewhat resembles PUBG; and the fantasy MMORPG, "Throne and Liberty." While "The Finals" is based on Unreal Engine 5, the latter two use UE 4. The company also announces that DLSS 2 (super resolution) is coming to "Fortnite Chapter 5," "Sands of Aura," "Silent Rain," "Soulslinger: Envoy of Death," and "The Devourer: Hunted Souls."

In addition, NVIDIA announced a few updates to its existing DLSS support base. "Call of Duty: Warzone Season 1" comes with DLSS 3 Frame Generation, DLAA, and Reflex. For "The Finals," besides DLSS 3, NVIDIA is announcing support for Reflex, which reduces whole-system latency by up to 57%. "Soulslinger: Envoy of Death" supports DLAA in addition to DLSS 2. NVIDIA late Tuesday released the GeForce 546.33 WHQL Game Ready drivers, be sure to grab them to enable DLSS and Reflex on the above games.

NVIDIA Celebrates 500 Games & Apps with DLSS and RTX Technologies

NVIDIA today announced the important milestone of 500 games and apps that take advantage of NVIDIA RTX, the transformative set of gaming graphics technologies, that among many other things, mainstreamed real-time ray tracing in the consumer gaming space, and debuted the most profound gaming technology of recent times—DLSS, or performance uplifts through high-quality upscaling technologies. The company got to this milestone over a 5-year period, with RTX seeing the light of the day in August 2018. NVIDIA RTX is the combined feature-set of real time ray tracing, including NVIDIA-specific enhancements; and DLSS.

Although it started out as an upscaling-based performance enhancement that leverages AI, DLSS encompasses a whole suite of technologies aimed at enhancing performance at minimal quality loss, and in some cases even enhances the image quality over native resolution. This includes super resolution, or the classic DLSS and DLSS 2 feature set; DLSS 3 Frame Generation, which nearly doubles frame-rates by generating entire alternate frames entirely using AI, without involving the graphics rendering machinery; and DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction, which attempts to vastly improve the fidelity of ray traced elements in upscaled scenarios.
