BOE showed off a 500 Hz desktop display earlier this, but this is a step up from that. The foldable OLED laptop display measures 17.3-inches and is as such similar to products we've seen from Samsung.

Samsung Goes Large with 55-inch Odyssey Ark Monitor

There's always a discussion about screen sizes and resolution when news about a new display is posted and we have a feeling that this one will be ultra polarising, since Samsung has decided to show off a 55-inch 4K curved display, with a tilt option. Yes, you read that correctly and there are pictures from CES to prove it as well. It would appear to come with a small, external control unit, which is likely to come handy, as reaching the onboard controls could be tricky on a large display like this.

Little else is known about the Odyssey Ark at this moment, but it's apparently using what Samsung calls a Quantum Mini-LED panel and it's meant to have multiple built in speakers. However, it is said to be a real product that should launch in the US market in the second half of this year, but expect to pay a crazy premium for the pleasure of owning one.

MSI Showcases the Creator 17 - "world's very first" Mini-LED Laptop

MSI at CES 2020 presented the "world's very first" laptop with a built-in display that uses Mini LED technology, called the Creator 17. Equipped with a 17-inch, 4K panel, the Creator 17 is a charming portable content creator PC. Incorporating the new Mini LED technology, this laptop's display outshines every commercial laptop screen. With a maximum peak brightness of up to 1000 nits, it beats most of the competition. Capable of displaying 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, this laptop screen is ready for displaying all of the HDR content you can throw at it.

When it comes to the Mini LED technology itself, it allows individual LEDs inside the screen to be less than 2 mm in size, which is very small and allows for some creative solutions. For example, MSI used this advantage to enable the display to have 240 local dimming zones, representing a big improvement in this size range compared to IPS. Another big improvement that Mini LED brings is that HDR content will get an upgrade as well. Due to the nature of Mini LEDs, the display can achieve a very distinguishing level of contrast between dark and bright areas. CPU support includes options of Intel's 10th generation Core i9 processor, while the GPU option is unknown. For storage, there are slots for two NVMe PCIe 3.0 M.2 SSDs and one M.2 SATA SSD slot.

ASUS Announces Mini-LED Powered ROG Swift PG27UQX G-Sync Ultimate Monitor

ASUS in partnership with NVIDIA announced at COMPUTEX 2019 their first Mini-LED powered PC monitor, which promises to bring the dimming zone game up to an unprecedented level - at least, on IPS technology. The usage of Mini-LED as lighting source for the ROG Swift PG27UQX means that there are many more areas that can be dimmed and brightened according to the displayed content: 576 of them, really, with each being comprised of mini LEDs that are a mere 200-300 micrometers in size.

The ROG Swift PG27UQX features a 27" panel with HDR support (HDR 1000 certification with up to 1,000 nits brightness). It's overclockable to a 144 Hz refresh rate, and color-wise offers DCI-P3 97% and Adobe RGB with quantum-dot technology for 99% coverage. ASUS says that the local dimming capabilities also allow for lower energy consumption (which does make sense). Connector-wise, we're looking at DisplayPort v1.4, HDMI (v2.0), 3x USB 3.0 and 1x 3.5 mm earphone jack. Being a G-Sync Ultimate panel, it features NVIDIA's latest G-Sync processor, which should bringing pricing to even higher levels than you are already expecting.

AUO Reportedly Shipping Mini-LED Panels for Gaming Monitors in 4Q18

According to a report by DigiTimes, panel-maker AU Optronics is looking to ship gaming panels with built-in mini-LED technology going into the 4Q 2018. This isn't a new display tech, and shouldn't be confused with Micro LED tech, which is hailed as the great coming of an OLED killer. Despite that, mini-LED remains a very interesting, likely crucial piece of technology in enabling much increased color accuracy and contrast ratios of current panel technology - thus also bettering HDR implementations.

Usually, a given monitor or TV features Edge-lit LED technology to achieve the backlighting necessary for image display (or in the case of OLED, there's no need for any of that, since it's a self-emissive technology). In recent times, contrast ratios have been increased by the introduction of local dimming (essentially, there are multiple LED lighting units across the entirety of the monitor or TV, which can be singularly controlled to achieve desired lighting ratios). Mini-LED technology brings this a leap further, allowing for an enormous increase in lighting zones - up to the tens of thousands, compared, for example, to the 384 local dimming units present on the recently released 4K, 144 Hz G-Sync monitors - of which AUO did sample specification-like panels but with this added mini-LED tech. Of course, these "tens of thousands" still pale in comparison to an OLED panel's pixel-count-like dimmable LEDs. As a bonus, panel thickness can also be reduced with mini-LED tech.
