Sharge Unveils Innovative Portable Power Products at CES 2024

Could a power bank be more than just a little paperweight with ports on it? Sharge is out to answer just this, with its innovative ultra compact power banks. Some of these are as small as a TWS headset's charging case, but carry enough charge to bail your phone or tablet out in crunch time. A unique design element with all Sharge products is their see-through polycarbonate bodies. The Starship Seer is a copper-colored portable charger that's about the size of a hockey puck, and packs a 10,000 mAh battery, with USB type-A and type-C outputs, along with support for 35 W USB-PD fast charging. It also has a little segment display on top that gives you discharging status, and doubles up as an alarm clock. If made to stay on its own with its fully charged 10,000 mAh battery, this thing might run a whole decade, if not more. Sharge is pricing this at $80. We also came across the keyfob sized Sharge Disk, an M.2-2230 NVMe SSD enclosure that can survive 6-foot drops, meets IP54 resistence, has an active cooling fan for the SSD, and offers a 10 Gbps USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface for the drive, along with UASP. Sharge is pricing this at $60.

The Sharge Internet Hostkey is a retro-futuristic looking power bank that comes in two variants, a 130 W-capable variant packing a 20,000 mAh battery; and a 40 W variant powered by a 10,000 mAh battery. You can charge up to 3 devices at once, with USB-PD of 135 W or 40 W, depending on the variant. It even has a retro-looking 7-segment display that reads out charging and date/time. The 130 W / 20 Ah variant is priced at $199, and the 40 W / 10 Ah variant at $99. Just be careful taking this thing through airports, it might not exactly look like a harmless power bank.

ROG Ally Gets BIOS Update that Fixes Multiple Usability Issues

ASUS has issued a BIOS update for the ROG Ally that should help resolve multiple usability issues, most of them being fairly minor issues, but they're all quality of life improvements nonetheless. To start with, ASUS has made optimisations to the performance mode with the Ally plugged in to a power source, although the company didn't explain exactly what this means. Another minor improvement allows the "Memory Assigned to GPU" setting to be kept when updating to a new BIOS version, a setting that used to get reset prior to this BIOS release.

Another minor quality of life update is the ability to reduce the backlight to 10 nits now, down from the previous 25 nits, which should make it more comfortable to use the ROG Ally in dark rooms. Finally and possibly the most important part of this update is the ability to charge at 30 W from 65 W or higher rated USB-PD chargers. What ASUS has done here is improvements to the USB-PD "handshake" to make sure that the ROG Ally gets the right power from the power adapter. This was apparently not working as intended previously and the ROG Ally would charge at a slower rate. It should be noted that not all chargers will provide enough power to the ROG Ally, especially if other devices are charging at the same time. ASUS points out that if the battery is draining when the Ally is plugged in, a different charger should be used.

Baseus Launches Charging Station with Retractable USB-C Cable

Baseus, a leading consumer electronics brand, recently launched an important product: the Baseus PowerCombo Tower series of smart 65 W desktop power strips. Anyone familiar with surge protectors has more or less heard about joules (J), the unit of energy. Baseus PowerCombo Tower series smart version stands out by featuring 1200J surge protection, while the industry standard is between 800 to 1000J, ensuring utmost safety for both individuals and devices.

The second great wall is the BDIP Baseus Digital Intelligent Power, a technology that monitors circuit status to detect malfunctions like overload, overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, short-circuit, and more, then actively cuts off the power in 0.1 seconds, solidifying the barrier. Yet, Baseus has gone further. The case is made of fire-retardant material, ensuring that the product is safe-to-use inside out, and is also superpowered by GaN technology which increases power conversion, resulting in less power loss translating to less heat generation, thereby cutting off the odds of causing damage. In short, this charging station features 8 safety protections, keeping its user and their devices safe 24/7 without requiring supervision.

Spigen Announces ArcStation Pro GaN Wall Charger Series

World-renowned mobile accessory brand Spigen announced its newest series to their mobile charging power accessory lineup: Spigen ArcStation Pro GaN 352, 452, 652. The first two digits mean total output watt and the last number is for the ports. (ex. 352: total 35 W with 2 ports) Some people might think there are not any problems using cheap, low-quality wall chargers to charge their devices. However, those types of chargers could actually damage the devices due to the ripple noise. The new Spigen ArcStation Pro GaN series minimizes ripple noise with Power Quality Technology to charge your device more safely than other wall chargers.

Also with the latest Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, the ArcStation Pro GaN Wall Charger series is able to perform more efficiently than traditional silicon-based chargers, generating a powerful output and less heat, with a compact size. According to the result of Spigen's charging speed test, this series can charge iPhone 14 Pro up to 84% within an hour. GaN 452 and GaN 652 are also compatible with the 'Samsung Galaxy series' Super Fast Charging 2.0.

Apple Begrudgingly Agrees to Comply with EU USB-C Charging Mandate

During The Wall Street Journal Tech Live conference, Greg Joswiak—Apple's SVP of worldwide marketing—begrudgingly said that Apple will comply with the European Union's USB-C charging mandate. He said that Apple has been in a "little bit of disagreement" with the EU over the change to a common charging standard. He made a comment about the fact that the EU initially wanted to standardise on micro USB for charging, but admitted that it never happened. He also claimed that neither USB-C or Apple's own lightning connector would exist today if micro USB had been mandated as the charging standard over 10 years ago, which may or may not be true.

According to Greg Joswiak, Apple feels that their change to chargers fitted with a USB-C port is good enough, since it allows anyone to plug in a USB-C cable into Apple's chargers and charge whatever device they like, regardless of the device connector. However, he conveniently forgot to mention that for such a scenario to work, everyone would have to carry a charging cable around with them, the part most people forget about. He also claimed that moving to USB-C means additional e-waste, due to a billion plus lightning cables being in the market already. The argument doesn't seem to hold though, as it's not as if current Apple device owners are just going to throw out their current devices, because Apple is being forced to move to USB-C. The same holds true for most people who have micro USB devices, they didn't throw them away just because they got some USB-C devices. In fairness, the Lightning cables would end up as e-waste at some point in the future, but so do many old cables of every single type over time. Apple would've preferred the EU not to interfere, as the company believes its solution is superior to USB-C for its customers.

Anker makes charging faster, smarter and greener with its new lineup of GaNPrime higher wattage charging solutions

Anker, the world's #1 mobile charging brand, today unveiled its new generation of Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, GaNPrime. Combining the latest in GaN technology with Anker's own proprietary features, GaNPrime allows for a safer, faster and more sustainable charging experience. "GaNPrime represents a new era in charging," said Steven Yang, CEO of Anker Innovations. "In addition to delivering a faster and safer charging experience, our new GaNPrime chargers offer significant savings in energy consumption, reinforcing Anker's commitment to a more sustainable future."

The benefits of GaNPrime don't end with device charging. Perhaps the most exciting benefit of GaNPrime is its increased power efficiency. With each charge, consumers save on average more than 7% in energy consumption compared to legacy silicon chargers. To put it in context, if everyone in the United States used the 150 W GaNPrime charger for a year, we could save up to 796 million kilowatt-hours. That would be enough energy to power the entire state of Hawaii for one month.
