XFX Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition 4 GB Retail Card and Packaging Pictured

Seen on numerous occasions and teaser videos as in either its prototype form or just plain CGI drawings, XFX seems to have finally made a working, ready for release iteration of its HD 5970 Black Edition 4 GB graphics card in its wacky retail packaging, which it hype-marketed through teaser videos. TweakPC got to lay its hands on one of these limited edition packages, and went ahead un"boxing" it. The package is actually a bag meant to carry small sniper-rifles (good luck getting it through customs). Inside, the actual graphics card is enclosed inside a case shaped somewhat like a Belgian P90 submachine gun. If that wasn't enough, the magazine pockets on the bag contain accessory boxes that look like magazines.

The card itself has a redesigned cooling assembly, that looks different from what the first iteration looked like. It has grooves on its top, and a badge with a limited edition serial number. Internally, the GPUs are pushed far apart, each has its own heatsink. The fan is located in the middle, it blows air to those heatsinks located on either sides. Power is drawn in from two 8-pin PCI-E power connectors. Display connectivity includes 6 mini-DP (DVI adapters included), supporting Eyefinity6. Each GPU carries the same clock profiles as the Radeon HD 5870, 850 MHz core, 1200 MHz (4800 MHz effective) memory, but addresses 2 GB of memory each. XFX seems to have commenced selling, expect it to be priced over $1000.

Pictures of the card follow.

Nice card from XFX... But, the XFX 5970 Black Edition can beat the ASUS ARES?

This will be interesting...

Yeah, if you throw it on someone's head.

Anyway, they want you to pay an extra $400 for a cheap plastic rifle-like package + a case + 2 exta GB ???

Besides you will have many problems with the airport if you decided to ship it, you know how they are paranoid.

I wonder who is the idiot that want to buy this ???

Oh I forgot we are on planet Earth, we have plenty of idiots :banghead:

Looks like a great card, but $350 extra for 1GB more per gpu... that just makes no damn sense, could buy a 5870 for that.

The heatsinks best be gold plated silver!

I wonder when heat-sink manufacturers will realise they can sort the second gpu being heated by the first problem by engineering the shroud a bit more.

Have two blower style fans in and simply shroud off the one in the middle/second gpu sink so that now has a direct fresh air source, the air from the other gpu will go around the outside of the shrouded second fan and meet up with the hot air from GPU 2 and come out the back.

Feel free to use my idea card makers!

Fed up with your lack of common sense!

XFX is a bit too late. They should have released this a long time back.

I've been waiting for this card to come out for ages, and only because the box looks like a gun. I'd buy it just for the box, it's that epic.

Anyone know of another 5970 with "eyefinity 6" on it as in 6 display ports? as i don't, i would assume that's meant to be another reason for the price bump (still too expensive but if you spend that much on a dual gpu card then logic proberley plays a small part in the choice)

I would never buy it, or even consider buying it; but I still like it!
Sounds like it's a profitable idea, marketing it in the image of a firearm, etc.
It's just missing the slogan: 'XFX: The Weapon of Choice'

A single 8 or 9 cm fan is not enough. I bet it's quite loud.

And what's the gun for? Are they marketing this to kids between the ages of 5 and 12?
