Don't Expect Too Much from Diablo III: Blizzard to Gamers

Diablo III has many gamers waiting for it with the anticipation of some Biblical event - the third-coming of Blizzard's popular hack-and-slash game. However, its makers worry that this anticipation could turn into over-hype, which could damage the game's market success once launched. A community manager at Blizzard Forums posted this carefully-worded note, in one of the countless threads in which fans drool rainbows over the upcoming game:
On a more serious note, I too worry that we won't be able to meet the expectations people have built up for themselves. Part of my job is managing people's expectations, so... eh... stop it. Stop thinking about how awesome this game could be. Just imagine it's a new M. Night Shyamalan movie. Sure Sixth Sense was amazing and Unbreakable had it's moments, but this right here is the sequel to The Village ... or The Happening ... or Signs ... or any of the movies besides the two I first mentioned. So just like, lower those expectations, but still definitely buy the game please, and everything will be just fine.
This fine-tuning of public opinion away from over-hype to healthy PR could work wonders for the game's success.

He is 100% right. I have been in Beta for A long time now.. they have changed alot ... and they keep changing stuff ! They are once again changing this skills (its on the main page). What they dont get or care about is ... IT SUCKs .. d3 beta is so freaking bad... it is all due to the skil tree and how it works. They really need to bring back the old d2 skill tree and set up. I am 100% sure this game WILL NOT be what the Masses want.

Too me they were tryn too make A MMO that also worked for PCs & console. It blows

DO NOT BUY THIS ON LAUCH ... WAIT FOR YOUR FIRENDS TO TELL YOU WHAT THEY THINK...

I didn't get beta key, but hey I am in small Eastern Europe country so, no big deal, also I have not much spare time to play. But with the development of WoW which I played since beta(I was there then) to WotLK I think that Blizz just rely on image from the past, and continue to expand the game for all kind of ages and sexes(lol) and make it easier and kinda stupid. I guess they want to do it with D3 also, so they can sell more copies = more profit. And they outsource a lot of the work for small coins => they make huge bucks. This is the recipe of successful economics.

Just SAD, i knew it wouldnt be as great... maybe if they plan something more open world with a better camera view... they tried to pack the same old stuff into new engine and graphics, its essentially the same old Diablo we knew 10 years ago with few tweaks, not up to today games.

No I definitely refuse to lower my expectations, simply because A, this is Blizzard we are talking about, and B, I have been waiting 12 years for this sequel. It brings back memories of my college days at China. I have the utmost faith in Blizzard and will not hesitate buying any of their games.

Already ordered my collector copy of D3. It comes out whenever it comes out, and I will still be a fanboy, even that means I have to wait for another 20 years.

They built there self a massive reputation with World of Warcraft. Do not expect the massive amount of content that players are use to. If blizzard knew the game was terrible I don't think they would release it, since its "so freaking bad"

This after Blizz hypes it more with a purchase of a year of WoW?

Anyone who went to Blizzcon 10 would also agree, Blizz is overhyping D3 to the extreme. That entire event should have just been a D3con.

Man Blizz has just gone down the hole fast after merging with Activision.

Why?

And do you remember the hype for Warcraft 3 or WoW?

Trying to reduce the hype for a game is pretty uncharacteristic of a development company ... not sure what to think about the PR statement.

Skyrim had a +100% hype spell going and the fans love it even considering its flaws. The haters will always hate so they are not a good PR benchmark.
I'm not sure the comment will make an difference ... at all.

@OneCool : "We had to delay the game because all the devs are playing Skyrim."

Agreed. Not a very smart PR move. Shows lack of confidence. Still that wouldn't affect my devotion to the game though.

It does seem like a lack of confidence. I think maybe not on the developers' part but the PR guy. Maybe he's paid on commission

The fans are going to buy the game. Period. There is no question about that at all.
I've been a huge fan of the ES series since Daggerfall. I NEVER buy on day one. I bought Skyrim on day one (as I did with Oblivion and Morrowind). lol
The only thing that will kill this game (D3) is making it overly dependent upon the internet and micro-transactions.

Diablo 3 will have better graphics, story line, game length, sound and so on over the previous older games. This is good enough for me. :D

Now what we need is some classic Warcraft 3 but with killer graphics and sound.

Don't worry Blizzard - I have long since learned to no longer expect very much from you.

The Heroes of my youth who Created Warcraft2, Starcraft & Broodwar, and Diablo 1 & 2 have LONG SINCE LEFT THE BUILDING.

Or at very least now sit on very very tall ivory chairs towering high above that actual ground level where the games are developed.

We all know you are not much more than a giant corporate money trap now - and I expect nothing more than that from you.

Lets face it - the moment you pulled the necromancer because "He was too popular and people didn't play the other characters" you said EVERYTHING we needed to hear.

Or maybe it even started earlier than that when WAR-craft 3 PUNISHED you for building an army?

UPKEEP W T F ??

WARS HAVE ARMIES YOU IDIOTS, What you released was "Minor Skirmish Craft 3" where in the very thought of having a war was punished.

Anyway blah blah fish-paste - basically I know Diablo 3 will have nothing to do with anything more than how much money you can make, and that's fine - that's all you are now Blizzard - and its all we expect from you.

Torchlight was AWSM. Basic, and repetitive .. But AWSM. I absolutely LOVED THE FLAMING HECK out of how you could continuously risk adding more and more enchantments to a weapon as much as you liked - that was almost borderlands like - and it was GREAT - MOAR PLEASE!

The problem with Blizzard is WOW, that bloody WOW, they've put way too much time into that game. Now hopefully they come out with WarCraft 3 style game play :)

Blizzard is right, the expectations for Diablo 3 are so high it is simply not possible to meet them with just a game. No matter how good it is.

And beta already is best game I have played since Diablo 2, and I can't remember any bad games from Blizzard so... don't worry too much.
