EVGA GeForce GTX 680 Cracks 1842 MHz Core

Thought the 1800/7700 MHz Radeon HD 7970 OC feat involving an MSI R7970 Lightning was impressive, wait till you see what the punters at EVGA, with K|ngp|n have in store. Armed with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 graphics cards, augmented by EVGA EPower board, and PrecisionX software, the EVGA GTX 680 was able to crack the 1800 MHz core frequency mark, reaching 1842 MHz, powered by a core voltage of 1.212V. Interestingly, the memory clock offset wasn't tinkered with. The rest of the system consisted of a Core i7-3960X clocked at ~5.50 GHz. The bench was stable enough to score 14912 points at 3DMark 11 (performance preset). Compare this, to the R7970 Lightning clocked at 1800 MHz core, 7.70 GHz memory (370 GB/s bandwidth), with no additional soldering except plugging in the GPU Reactor, and a slower Core i7-3960X CPU (clocked at 5.00 GHz), which went on to score P15035. Luckily for EVGA, the overclocking feat hasn't ended, and is still work in progress.

Hmm they still did not beat the 7970 in 3Dm11, they also didn't OC the memory like the 7970 did. Came close though :)

Yup! Shame they had to mod the card so heavily though as compared to the near "stock" run of the lightning 7970. When i say near stock i mean the card wasn't actually hard modded :o

Still this is good sign for us normal guy's :D

if they make a 680 lightning they shouldnt need to hard mod it either, the lightning series basically adds all the extra circutry that they hard modded the 680 with. a stock 7970 is hardly capable of that even with extreme cooling.

WOW, just 1.212V, what kind of Amperage is flowing through the veins of that 680... :toast:

Dude i wasn't bagging on it, maybe it came across like that but it was not my intention, it's an amazing feat for a new card on a reference design board and like i said before it only mean's good thing's for us little guy's :)

I don't keep up with benching so i can't say what ATi was able to accomplish (or not) with their reference card's. But judging from the few thing's i have seen i think a hard modded 7970 could keep pace with this 680 :o I mean there are quite a few 1300Mhz ++ on air and unmoded so....

Keep pushing the limit's proclocker's! :rockout:

So the cards aren't OC locked after all... good, and this is for a mid range part, the high end GK110 should be a monster, although it won't OC as high as GK104 probably, mid range GPUs are usually easier to OC than high end parts due to lower complexity in their design.

What a nice little GPU Nvidia has crafted ;)

Are you referring to the 680? It's not $600+, it's $499:confused:

Even at 499+ it is still one I will never be able to have. When will they put out one high end GPU that is priced for the average American? I mean I have a family and a home!

Because the high-end is essentially a luxury item and there are plenty of people willing to pay that much, unfortunately. No one needs a $500 card to have a great PC gaming experience.

I guess they feel I do not need that experience as well.

Yes, I see what you mean, this card should be around $399 or less due to it really being a 300 mm2 GPU, but the competition released a lower performance card at $549 :( at least this card should start a price war and prices can only go down hopefuly.

Both manufacturers know the sweet spot is $250, I believe you'll be able to get a card with all the latest features in that price bracket soon when both companies come to their senses.

By the time it is low enough for me to afford it there will be 8 more video cards that have replaced it. :twitch:

the cards are oc locked. and the bios is digitally signed.

so evga created a special bios, signed it with their debug key, and gave it to the overclockers.

and yes this means no more bios moddding for end users

Question is will MFG's provide the same service to regular end user's? Maybe with not as much "de-regulation" but still more ability than currently available

Ability to custom mod your own BIOS could be a detractor for some user's :o

Thanks, I wonder how long it'll take for us mere mortals to have access to this "special bios" :p

Same as Ferrari doesn't care that you'll never experience their amazing automobiles. All they truly care about is making as much money as possible. Should be no surprise there. No one is in business to do us any favors.

nobody knows. right now board partners are in panic mode because of all the new thingies and dynamic oc eating into the sales of their OC boards

nvidia was very clear that partners must install power measurement circuitry, must guarantee stability over all clock&voltage combinations, must mention both base and boost clock in their messaging, must enable dynamic oc and can only incresae oc base and boost by the same percentage
