EA-DICE Rolls Out Battlefield 4 Update with AMD Mantle Support

DICE, developers of the smash-hit online multiplayer FPS of the season, Battlefield 4, rolled out its promised game update that lends it support for AMD Mantle API. The low-overhead 3D graphics API, according to leaked documents we've seen, is claimed to improve performance of the game by up to 45 percent in CPU-limited scenarios. By that token, we imagine the performance increment in GPU-limited scenarios to be different. The game patch is only half of the story. The other half is the API itself, which will be distributed by AMD, in its Catalyst software suite. The first public release of Mantle will be part of Catalyst 14.1 beta, which will be rolling out a little later this week. Stay tuned for our comprehensive DirectX 11.1 vs. Mantle testing, starring a Radeon R9 290.

Regarding the Cat release this may or may not be an issue too:
PCPer.comA few of these known issues are worth mentioning here. For starters, AMD specifically points out that performance improvements for Mantle on the HD 7000 series, R9 280X and R9 270X “will be optimized for BF4 in future AMD Catalyst releases” leaving me to believe that only the R9 290 and R9 290X (as well as the 260X) are really being supported at launch. Only those parts based on the new Hawaii architecture with support for XDMA and TrueAudio seem to be the target.

No, but you still have to download this 1.2 GB update to be able to play the game :p

Let's hope this gives some serious performance improvement for AMD cards and really put the hurt on nvidia. I just paid over £500 for a GTX 780 Ti and that's too much. With really stiff competition I reckon the price could drop by £100 easy.

It downloads OK here. Wonder if the game will work after. Or even better, given Dice/EA's total mess of a game maybe Mantle will work on my Nvidia card!

If it is too much then why did you pay for it?

It looks like from intial test data that Mantle can make a significant improvement in applications that are CPU bottlenecked and less in those that are GPU bottlenecked, but good gains none the less. Mantle will likely hurt Intel as much or more than Nvidia. The good news is many in the industry have taken to Mantle so it should become the defacto standard and that means even better performance going forward.

Is this a mandatory update even if you have an Nvidia card? I have the game installed on a 60GB SSD along with Windows 7 and I only have about 3GB left of space on it. I know it's not good but the game just loads too slowly from a standard HDD.
