Playstation 2 sold better than Xbox360 during holidays

In the United States, the Xbox360 wiped the floor with all the other next-generation consoles, figuratively speaking in terms of console sales. The Xbox360 sold 1.1 million consoles, which beat the amount of Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation 3 sales. However, while the Xbox360 may be the champion of the new, it has yet to beat the old. Sony managed to sell 1.4 million PlayStation 2s over the holidays in the United States. Whether or not the PlayStation 2 will continue selling this well, only time will tell. PlayStation 2 sales will likely diminish as more games come out exclusively for next-gen consoles, and next-gen consoles have less production issues (low supply, high demand).

If it aint broke, dont fix it, thats what I say. Its good to see the ole PS2 still going. Some of the latest games for the console look absolutely breathtaking and there is still alot of life left in the console. Granted, it doesnt look as beautiful as the 360 or PS3, but its still fun to play and a great product. Im assuming some or most of these sales were for people who are replacing the "older" ps2 consoles or those who couldnt afford the higher price tag of next gen consoles.

PS2 and Nintendo DS are still selling at an amazing rate. For plenty of people, a PS2 will be great. Good place to start if you've never had a console before.

True Jimmy. The Ds was hard to find for my niece. My sister went everywhere. She wanted the Pink one but had to settle for the coral white one.

I still play my PS2, there are plenty of great games for it. I am surprised that it outsold the top Next-Gen console though.

When I bought my PS2 on launch, all I did was play PS1 games on it for the first month until there was finally a PS2 game that looked interesting.

What do you mean don't talk about price and crap? Price is the reason that it is still selling so well - the demand for something is based on the price. If it's cheap, more people will buy it. Someone who's looking for a cheap console that will play almost every game from the last few years is going to buy it, there are still great games on the PS2. Graphics aren't everything.

The PS2 is selling well because it's ~$120. Goes to show you why the PS3 is selling like crap.

PS2 is cheap and good, PS3 is expensive and disgraceful. PS2 is also a small console so that would explain it. The games that are on it are good, when compared to PS3... its basically got half the gameplay cut down because of removal of features.

PS2 Could be a good 128-bit Linux Machine though

the ps2 is fun stuff. a lot of great titles out there for cheap and the console is like 120 bucks. i saw my local store selling refurbished ones for 90 bucks with two controllers and a memory card. so im not surprised by the ps2 outselling the xbox360. i wonder if sony figured the ps3 wouldnt sell like hotcakes right away.

Sony tried to replicate the PS2's intitial success with the DVD format. At first the PS2 was the cheapest available DVD player, and it sold like mad in Japan, and fairly well here. Sony has an ego and decided that everyone would want BluRay movies, but forgot that there was some competition this time. The PS2 is a great console and is one of my favorites up with the NES and the PSX. I've actually been thinking about buying a PS2 just because of how cheap it is, and all the games I love on it.
