PAL PS3 backwards compatibility tested

We already wrote about the somewhat crippled PAL version of the Playstation 3 numerous times. Finally some Germans got first in reviewing the unit focused on backward compatibility and describing their findings over here.
To sum it up: 11 out of 12 games do not work! And they say the games in question were all quite new and popular (even the games made by Sony won't work). The reviewed console had the firmware rev. 1.50 installed which will be the release firmware for all the PS3 delivered on March 23rd. Only the future will tell how fast Sony will bring a new more compatible revision.
Here is the list of the tested games, Eragon being the only success.

- God of War
- MGS 2: Sons of Liberty
- MGS 3: Snake Eater
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Guitar Hero 2
- Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
- Okami
- GTA: Liberty City Stories
- Eragon
- Final Fantasy X-2
- Ratchet & Clank 3
- Lumines Plus

If you dare to read the machine translated german story yourself click here.

i don't really see this as a problem, though i know some will

i bought a ps3 to play ps3 games, as odd as that sounds

if i wanted to play my library of ps2 games it would be nice to be able to use my ps3, but i would also have a perfectly fine ps2 around if i really really wanted to

also, i think many have forgotten how bad the xbox360 compatibility was when it was first launched, something around only 300 games were playable, and in fact it is still pretty bad

actually, as of 12/06, the xbox360 was compatible with just under 300 xbox games

www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm

and it still managed to be the best selling next-gen console this holiday

sony claims that they aim to have 1000 games working at launch, that is a pretty impressive number imho

The reason people want PS2 compatability is because the PS3 has 1 game worth playing (but definately not worth buying a PS3 for): MotoStorm.... and maybe flOw

nope...

ps3 will have Metal gear, while 360 has halo3...ps3 has gt5, while 360 has forza2...etc, they do share common games, such as gta4, but not all...most of the great console games are single sided.

resistance is very "worth playing", but i agree, not worth spending $600 to play

but i would say no console is really worth the price when it first comes out

they usually aren't worth it until the first price drop, by then there is a good library of games available and the price is obviously more reasonable

Odd as it sounds, people ith PS2 games will want to play them still, especially games like the MGS series  aside from the fact its a waste of space and untidy to keep last gen consoles cluttering the place up, 99% of console owners sell their old gen console and use the ££ toward the new gen.

Yes resistance is worth playing, but after playing CoD2, Resistance is not worth buying.

This is just another Sony money making scheme. Don't let them play PS2 games, then we'll release the PS2 games for PS3 in 6 months time and charge the mugs again!!

well i have never once sold my old systems to buy new, but i agree trading the old ones in for new does happen, and for those that do it, they are just going to have to be happy with the ~1000 games the ps3 can handle to play or wait for sony to release new firmware that supports new games

though i have to say again, i buy a ps3 to play ps3 games, if i was more concerned with playing ps2 games, i would just keep my ps2 instead of trading it in

indeed it is a scheme to make money, something they are failing to do currently with the ps3 in its current configuration

contrary to popular belief sony is not unicef

sony is a business, and part of being a business is to make money on the products you sell

they feel they can't make a profit with the current hardward configuration, and i am included to believe them

i don't believe they are going to do what you claim and just rerelease the games again as ps3 games to make people pay for them again, if that was the case they wouldn't have backwards compatibility at all
