It's geographically part of the continent, but separated by Canada, so not considered contiguous (connected).

"Open to our readers from the Continental US and Canada"

Continental US is essentially business shorthand for "not Alaska and Hawaii," unfortunately. It's fairly understandable from a shipping point of view, since most carriers (UPS, FedEx, DHL, etc) charge high rates in and out of AK/HI, but for USPS it's identical. Most people don't know that, though, so they just exclude us entirely. We're used to it. :)
