Microsoft explains the high cost of 120GB Xbox 360 hard drive

Anyone hoping to plug in a 120GB hard drive into their Xbox is going to have to pay a figurative pretty penny for the privilege. To replace your 20GB Xbox360 hard drive with a 120GB version will cost the end user roughly $180 USD. Most people would argue that this is an absolutely ridiculous price, considering you can get a small enclosed external hard drive with the same capacity for less than $100 USD ($120 USD when it's not on sale). Microsoft said in a podcast exactly why they are making a 120GB hard drive a $180 attachment. Microsoft claims that everything in their hard drive is designed specifically for the Xbox 360. This means that you don't have to configure anything when you install this new hard drive, it's just plug-and-play. Microsoft has also put their Xbox360 hard drives through rigorous tests several times, a claim upon which other manufacturers aren't "able to deliver" according to Microsoft.

Its just a 2.5" sata drive in a plastic enclosure with a proprietary external connection.

Microsoft cant justify any price premium, especially one this insane.

So the high cost is the format A?.......Yea that cost big $$$$$ to copy over and over and over.

So if I plug in a new HDD for my PC its not plug and play like the OLD OLD OLD days?

I think microsoft is just bullshitting. If there is a superior 2.5 size hard drive out there that is better than what consumers can buy for less, I'd like to hear about it. :nutkick:

They're probably trying to rip us all off, and trying to reason it off.

im am surprised some third party company still hasn't produced a hdd caddy for the xbox, no doubt which ever company decides to make one will have quite a popular product on their hands.

The caddy design will be patented. Without proper permission, no one can.

Alright then, keep the caddy, and just give me a cord that I can plug into an eSATA enclosure.

Billyboy whats going on?

Bill gates wants all the money he can squeeze out of us, Tech is a very powerful ware but if we do not learn or are given the data to manage procesing capability we are just left out of the loop but still feeding the loop cause we want our tech to achieve astronomical events. but where is the middle line? the loop has it and it has slid it to 90% to their advantage . ?(www.census.gov/hhes/www/income/income05/statemhi3.html)it must be me but why would I pay $300 for a phone with a 200mhz chip and mobile 5.0 lets see 3.2ghz for 50$ maybe less does anyone see it? should we not free our computers? and do not ,discard all proccesing units 'but give it to some one in need ask your local mayors office for one free computer per househould atleast a tax break so we continue our reaserch to better our lifes?

Wow, they are charging the consumer for their own quality control? I disappointed I was expecting something more fancier then that.

I bet there is too Ketxxx. Sure, we will have to format it and do a couple of things, but if I can put 300GB SATA HDD connected to the 360, then hell, I dont mind.
