World of Warcraft tale of romance Goes awry when police Arrest 'kidnapper'

Two people fell in love with each other over one of the most addictive MMORPGs ever, World of Warcraft. The couple spent long hours on the phone together, played through countless quests as a couple, and even talked about marriage. There were just two problems with this couple. The groom is 17, and the bride is 31. The two made plans to meet, and the bride flew over from Australia to North Carolina to pick up her dream date on June 12th. Unfortunately for her, anyone under the age of 18 is a minor in the state of North Carolina. After the groom's parents reported him as missing, the police apprehended the couple as they were trying to hitch a ride to Australia on June 26th. The groom is home, almost certainly grounded. However, the bride faired much worse. On July 11th, she goes on trial for the attempted abduction of a minor. If the bride is found guilty, she will get two years behind bars in an American jail. Australian customs is working hard to get the bride set free.

Meh, one more year till manhood. But in most states you can marry as early as 16, but you need parental consent.

17 is enough to merit his own decision making, old enough to be tried as an adult, so where do the parents get off pressing charges when it was clearly his decision. sure they may not like it, but hey in a year he'll do it anyway, but without any contact with them.

I swear some parents are dumb as rocks, congrats on alienating your kid forever.

17 is if the kid is mature enough to pay his own bills, buy his own shit, work his own job, maintain his own vehicle. If mommy and daddy were paying for that WoW subscribtion he played in his room with the PC they bought, then that doesn't show me he's man enough to step up yet. If 17 is old enough for his decision to get married, why couldn't he move out, forge his age to get a place or find some friends to live with? Hell my dad moved out at 14, my girlfriend at 16, I didn't leave until 18, but had a job since I was 14 (I forged my age, told them after I turned 15, and I worked so hard the let me keep my job).

And maybe I'm wrong and he is all of those things, and is that capable. But teens especially think the "real world" is easier than it is, bills, working, payments, credit, mortgages, etc. Sure they're not too hard to do or obtain, but can be hard to understand and maintain. But most of all it helps to have common sense and a brain, and use both. And maybe he did, but from that insert in the first post I read, meeting somone on WoW and talking of marrage doesn't show me that this kid is as "grown up" as he thinks he is. Like the saying goes, it's easier to talk the talk than walk the walk. :toast:

hey at 17 you can enlist in the military, or formally move out of your parents house and hold a job that the government WILL tax you for. I enlisted when I was 17 :D

Just because they met in WoW, doesnt mean they didnt talk daily OUT of the game too - i've met lots of people online first, in games and chatrooms and gone to meet them in real life years later.

They mention they met in WoW and gamed a lot, but i'm yet to see any of this kind of article mention - did they use webcam and voice chat (video calls) to each other? how much of their gaming time was spent alone with just each other (henceforth, it might as well have been a chat program with distractions)

I hate WoW but this is just sad, pity the kid wasnt 18 already.

HAHA i knew a guy, well rather i knew a guy that knew a guy, that played WoW, FFXI, and some EQ game w/ this chick. I think he was 16-ish at the time.. and she was FORTY. it got pretty intense, because she'd drive 4 hours to go take him away to a hotel, then she'd take him back a couple days later. then the mom got the police involved, and it just went downhill from there. its funny because its nearly identical to this, except for whole "crossin the pond" thing.

The only part in the world that people say a 17 year old is mature enough and where kids say " Im 14 mom ! " is the USA...
Well i guess you must allow minors to drive cars in order to sustain the car industry :)

It's kinda funny that if YOU do something wrong at the age of 17 you can be tried as an adult. But if SOMEONE ELSE does something to you, you are charged as a minor :shadedshu.

Notice the pale skin, baggy eyes, and fat. The disease that caused this person to look like this is called WoWitis.

I don't get it -- according to this, all relevant laws on the books there list 16 as the age of consent in the state of North Carolina...

Nothing about at what age you're considered a "minor," though, or why you can apparently be considered a minor but still legally have sex with someone of any age...:confused:
