Gabe Newell: Vista-Exclusive DirectX 10 is 'A Terrible Mistake'
Gabe Newell, one of the more popular directors of Valve Steam, recently berated Microsoft on it's choice of making DX10 Vista exclusive. A recent Steam survey shows that only 2% of gamers own both at least one DirectX10 capable graphics card and Microsoft Windows Vista. Newell also pointed out that none of the next-generation consoles use DirectX 10 features, limiting DX10 support. It would seem as though there is a general consensus among gamers and developers is nicely summed up by The Inquirer:

(DirectX 10) fractures an already-diverse PC gaming market even more, making consoles look even more attractive. One only has to look at Bioshock - the PC version has staggering requirements, barely any image quality upgrade under DX10/Vista, as well as installation issues - whereas the Xbox 360 version plugs in and works.

I mean fresh code from the start, I don't want to see the same programming for the login control!
Valve is a company, and a fairly large one, and it only takes a few to say
"heh microsoft you are being retarded"
"so take your dx10 sdk's and shove em where the sun doesn't shine"
And microsoft will be pretty much forced to release it for XP/2003 otherwise
these companies will start to look elsewhere and step away from directX.
Plus OpenGL is "open aka opensource"
Talk about savings of money and adding easier migration for linux/mac os game releases...
And wow what would happen to the MS xbox! *glad I don't own one*
Xp *with the dx10 support though*
AlkyProject FTW! :)
P.S. As part of my psychological research studies, could you please post your weight so I can analyse a correlation between mass and comment. I believe there is a square root relationship.
2007 is a chaotic year for the PC... :
- Vista was released too early,
- There isn't much support even today by the major software and hardware companies, probably because of the complexity of the code
- DX10 video cards are pretty mediocre, their performance is quite poor when using DX10,
- Vista is too expensive and is quite "heavy",
- There is already plans to a new Windows... it's ridiculous
They really expect that we pay so much for such a bunch of problems? :banghead:
I think Valve and other game companies have to think about focusing on DX9, let the hardware market cool down, see what happens and only then think seriously about the chaos a.k.a. "DX10 and Vista".
Like they say: "Steam survey shows that only 2% of gamers own both at least one DirectX10 capable graphics card and Microsoft Windows Vista". Gamers are not stupid, like M$ would like.
NO to xbox, NO to Vista. They don't control us, we have brains. :nutkick: And we have allies (like Gabe Newell). :rockout:
Also, in my opinion ME was the worst OS from MS to date.
Besides, I'm getting pretty pissed at Valve right now because I remember when they said that with episodic content, they'd be able to release episoded every 1 to 2 months...... assholes. It takes 1-year intervals for them to release 3 hour episodes, and episode 1 just recycled all of the old models and textures. He's just pissed that they are getting way behind the graphical benchmark set by Epic and Crytek, so they actually have to start doing some real work, again.
