Extremetech.com reports that Samsung, one of the biggest RAM producing companies, is outputing more DDR2 RAM than DDR1 for the first time. Although DDR1 will not die out anytime soon, the hardware scene has shifted towards DDR2. Well, at least the Intel hardware scene.

Although AMD CPUs don't support DDR2 yet, with the introduction of the "M2" socket and compatible CPUs AMD will support DDR2. AMD integrates the memory controller onto their Athlon64 CPUs, so it takes a bit more time for them to innovate and catch up with newer tech. And supposedly Athlons benefit more from lower latency timings of DDR1 rather than the higher bandwidth of DDR2.

Benefits of DDR2 RAM include faster clocks, higher bandwidth and lower power consumption than DDR1. Athlough current DDR2 RAM is plagued by high latencies and a slightly higher price for consumers.
