ASUS Eee PC with Windows XP Outlined

ASUS North American headquarters today confirmed the plan to offer channel-wide availability of the Microsoft Windows XP-based Eee PC. "The Eee PC has been a tremendous success since our initial launch in November last year, and our channel customers tell us they want to offer even more options to their end consumers. With the new Windows XP based offerings, we expect to engage with a broader customer base whose existing software and applications require a Windows' based device," said Jackie Hsu, President of ASUS America Channel. The Microsoft Windows XP-preinstalled Eee PC is expected to be available through ASUS North American authorized resellers by the end of Q1, 2008. The introductory models will be equipped with 4GB or 8GB of solid state drive. Pricing information is not available at this time.

Add Windows? There goes the under $400 for the top-end model... (unless Microsoft decides to take the loss so as to discourage linux use)

I know its meant for emerging markets only, but I wonder if they considered Vista Starter edition instead of XP............you would think MS would prefer versions of Vista hitting the market.

Or is this version even too big for the Eee?

EDIT: actually, the Eee website just says Windows, it doesn't specify that it will be XP

Vista starter doesn't support more than 256mb RAM and most EEE pcs have 512mb RAM so that'd be no good (yes, emerging markets get a taste of vista with 256mb RAM...)
