I would rather save myself a few $1000 and build a powerful desktop. I only like laptops for business apps and web surfing.

True -- I think it's neat and all, but I just keep wondering about what's the point of a laptop like this? Just to make one to see if it can be done? I can respect that, I guess.

Professional gamers going mobile? They usually lug around desktops.

Kids going to college who want to play games? Call me crazy, but personally I think there's something wrong with someone spending money equivalent to college tuition for a semester just on a laptop. :p

Maybe CAD-users that are mobile a lot?

I don't really see how anyone buys these things, but I know there are people out there that will buy anything. I need a new laptop, but I prefer something in the mid-range. Mid-range graphics card, preferably one that can be disabled so I can use the more efficient onboard card, mid-range CPU, 15" LCD or smaller, and most imporatantly good battery life.

Seriously though, I could see people that travel a lot that like to play games buying something like this. People that spend more time in airports and hotels than they do at their own home. I knew a guy like this, he would spend maybe one weekend a month at home, he was my neighbor for a while. He had a very nice laptop for playing games, him and I would play CS:S together when he was on the road. He always had a nice laptop, he loved being able to just plug it in at whatever hotel he was at and play games and he used it for work also. He did presentations at business or some crap like that, I'm not exactly sure about what, but it had to do with advertising.

The only computer i can think of that switches from onboard to dedicated and vice versa are from SONY. And they are pricey, and midrange units.

Which is why I don't actually have one yet. :)

I am hoping that Hybrid-SLI takes off soon, especially on the laptop front, and we see more of these.

Its a pretty nice Dell lappy that they have right there.. only Problem its $4.974 all together.

Also on another note. In October, I was reading the PC world and started this thread that talks about what was in the article.

If you feel that you need that sort of thing, then i'm all for it. But like Therm says, i'd rather spend a thousand dollars, to get better results...

CAD users wouldn't even need this they run on intel integrated just fine @1280X1024 and my 7800GS can push that res up a lot higher even with a lowend cpu if your mobile your best bet is a 2600M or 8600M if you really need to push the resolution

I need a fast laptop for uni, thats gonna last for the duration of the course. Theres gonna be a lot of code and program compilation, so the computer needs to be fast (and I dont fancy travelling on the train for an hour every day with a desktop :p). Sure this doesnt need a good graphics card...but 3 hr uni breaks can get boring.

Now...this doesnt mean im going to go straight onto the dell site and spend $3400 USD ($4000 AUD). I will wait for ebay sellers to get their hands on them (normally lots of ebay sellers get 30% off coupons on laptops) and save myself a lot. OR, wait till Dell have their offers (I have seen them with like $800 cash off, etc)

I did it two years ago for my brother....top of the line (at the time) Dell inspiron 9300, 2ghz proccy, 1.5gb ram, nvidia 6800 256mb and 3yr full service warranty for $2200; the cheapest it was here on the Aussie Dell site was $4,650.


Oh, and my dad will get 30% off the final price with salary sacraficing for his work, so in actual fact, it only costed like $1600 for a $4500+ laptop :p.

Sadly I can tell you a market for this. When I went to the middle east for 6 months I went out and bought a nice and powerful laptop along with many others in my battalion. Now those deployments have turned into a year or more. What we are allowed to take is very limited space and size wise.
Its nice being able to network and play in groups as well as get email and webcam (if available) while away for that long.
