Fujitsu to Release 2.5-inch Laptop Hard Drive with 500GB Capacity

Fujitsu Limited today announced the release of its new series of MHZ2 BT 2.5" hard disk drives with world-class capacity of up to 500GB. Sales of the new series will begin at the end of May 2008. The new series responds to the growing need for hard drives in the 2.5" form factor that can handle high-volume storage for such products as digital video recorders and external hard drives.

The MHZ2 BT series requires only 1.8 W of power for read and write operations, ranking it among the most power-efficient drives in its class. The series is one of many new products announced as part of Fujitsu's Green Policy Innovation program, unveiled in December 2007 to promote energy-efficient products and services as a way to help customers lower their ecological footprint.

With the global spread of digital broadcasts and Internet-based video distribution, along with the increased storage requirements stemming from the higher image quality of video content, there is an increasing need for high-capacity hard disk drives that can handle high-volume data storage.

But with growing worldwide concern over global warming and other environmental problems, there is a demand for hard disk drives that consume less electricity.

Fujitsu has responded to these needs with hard disk drives that have storage capacities of up to 500 GB for use in personal computers, Digital Video Recorders (DVR), Set Top Boxes (STB), and external hard disk drives, representing an environmentally friendly choice for customers who need hard disk drives with large storage capacities.

As an environmentally friendly product, these hard disk drives use 1.8 W for read and write operations, ranking them among the most power-efficient 2.5" HDDs in the industry. They are also manufactured in compliance with the EU's RoHS Directive, which limits the use of hazardous substances.

In addition, the series also supports the Serial ATA 3.0 Gb/s interface for high-speed data transfers. Moreover, capitalizing on the vast experience and reputation for reliability that Fujitsu has accumulated through over 40 years of HDD development, the series delivers the superior quality that customers have come to expect from Fujitsu

What's the rotational speed I wonder. It wouldn't surprise me if it were 4200rpm.

If these drives would drop in price a lot it would be nice for RAID arrays. Take up little space, little power, silent. And at the same time it could offer performance and redundancy.

i can see them working better in the usb esata market better as a small 500gig hard drive and if its 4200rpm you can run the power of usb so no need for power cables! if they can do this with 2.5 drives just imagine what our desktop drive are going to be like!

If you're going to do Yoda-Speak, do it right.

I'm happy with my 200GB 7200rpm Hitachi. When they start putting out 7200rpm half-terabyte 2.5" HDDs then I'll be interested.

That's my thoughts. I'm not really interested in drives with slow rotational speeds. I'd never consider 4200rpm, but I would consider 5400rpm if they got them up to 750GB-1TB. Otherwise, it's 7200rpm or death. I just ordered a lappy. (check out this deal: www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16834210011 ) It comes with a 5400rpm 250GB drive.

Well to go with the lappy I already ordered this: HITACHI Travelstar 7K200 HTS722012K9SA00 (0A50938) 120GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA-150 Notebook Hard Drive. I'll gladly sacrifice the 130GB of space for the speed. Plus, I can still use the 250GB in my ps3, then I can throw the 60GB ps3 drive in an enclosure for a little extra storage on the lappy.
