Kontron introduces mITX for Intel Core Duo CPUs

Eching/Nuremberg, Germany, February 14th, 2006 - Parallel to the launch of the Intel CoreTM Duo processors for embedded market segments at Embedded World, Kontron, a Premier member of the Intel Communication Alliance with worldwide presence, is introducing four embedded computing platforms with the new dual-core processors: a mini-ITX motherboard, a 3U and a 6U CompactPCI board, and an ETXexpress module (meeting the COM Express specification in accordance with PICMG COM.0). Each Kontron board is equipped with the 2-GHz Intel CoreTM Duo processor T2500; three of them with the Mobile Intel 945GM Express chipset and the 6U CompactPCI board with the Intel E7520 and 6300ESB.

They all offer up to twice the performance of the Intel Pentium M processors at the same GHz clock speed; power consumption, at up to 31 W, is extremely low. These new boards based on Intel processors will revolutionize the market for embedded computer technology, making integration of two or more previously standalone applications into a system possible without an interference between them. These new processor features can help drastically reduce hardware costs and time to market for OEMs.

"These new processors deliver a new level of performance," says Norbert Hauser, Vice President, Marketing at Kontron, in the opening of his presentation in which he presents the first Kontron produced benchmarks comparing boards based on the Intel Pentium M 756 processor (2.1 GHz) to boards using the Intel Core Duo processor (2.16 GHz): "The Kontron boards based on the new dual -core processors show an increase in floating point performance of over 96.5%, higher integer performance of over 89.3%, and double the 3D mark - these are performance increases that definitely validate Moore's Law." These measurements were made in Kontron boards using a single-threaded software environment. If existing software is optimized to be multithreaded, an even more dramatic increase in performance can be expected. For many applications that were not previously available for parallel computers due to prohibitively high costs, this results in a performance explosion creating previously unimaginable possibilities. Applications such as visualization and control will also be able to be implemented in one system with various operating systems, while maintaining hardware costs under control. "We expect that Intel dual core technology will become the processor technology of choice for high-end embedded computing, delivering a level of performance significantly higher than what you could achieve with the Intel Pentium M processor two years ago," concludes Mr. Hauser from Kontron. Kontron will introduce a total of more than ten different embedded computing platforms with these new Intel Core Duo processors to the market in 2006.

"The Intel Core Duo processors combine the benefits of two high performance execution cores with intelligent power management features to deliver significantly greater performance per watt" says Doug Davis, vice president, Digital Enterprise Group, general manager, Communications Infrastructure Group at Intel. "By using Intel building blocks, Kontron will be able to meet the needs of a range of embedded applications that demand both low power and high performance."
Kontron is a Premier Member in the Intel Communication Alliance. Over the years Kontron has developed a very close working relationship with Intel that enables Kontron to get early access to upcoming Intel products and technology. Beta versions of the Kontron boards are ready right after the Embedded World launch and Kontron is taking orders for samples of the four new Intel based dual-core products during the Embedded World trade show.

Application Areas for the New Dual-Core Boards
The Kontron mini-ITX board with dual core is built into classic IPCs as well as into interactive gaming machines with two monitors for two players. Its essential advantages over commercial boards are its long-term availability and low power consumption.
