The Intel Atom S1240 is a server/workstation processor with 2 cores, launched in December 2012. It is part of the Atom lineup, using the Centerton architecture with BGA 1283. Thanks to Intel Hyper-Threading the core-count is effectively doubled, to 4 threads. Atom S1240 has 512 KB of L2 cache per core and operates at 1600 MHz. Intel is building the Atom S1240 on a 32 nm production process, the transistor count is unknown. The multiplier is locked on Atom S1240, which limits its overclocking capabilities.
With a TDP of 6 W, the Atom S1240 consumes extremely little energy. Intel's processor supports DDR3 memory. Although neither the processor nor its chipsets support integrated graphics, certain motherboards include dedicated graphics chipset that can provide some basic display output functionality.
The SSE4 instruction set is not supported, which can cause problems with modern games, as they require that capability. Hardware virtualization is available on the Atom S1240, which greatly improves virtual machine performance.
