Hi , i will post here because it suits my question best.I want to buy a 4850 but i'm not sure wich model will overclock best and my choices are this :
1. gigabyte with zalman 512 or 1 gb but the ones that come overclocked to 700 GPU seems they overclock better that the ones at 625 from 1 review i saw on guru3d
2.gainward the 512 or 1gb again the ones that come overclocked to 700 mhz
3.HIS are very good overclocker from what i read on forums but again luck comes into place and some couldn't get past 690 gpu, so , really poor and the HIS cards have premium prices.
4.palit sonic , gecube ...etc. could be considered but not my first choices.
Gigabyte seems to have the best contruction of the card but i don't know ,so WHAT CARD SHOULD I GET THAT WILL OVERCLOCK AT LEAST 750 gpu or even more without tempering with voltmod , maybe a bios but i would pass if it can be passed ?
silkstone what gigabyte do you bought the one with 700 already or the one with 625 ?

Excuse my english not my native language.

I just have the vanilla 625, it's at 725 now (stock cooling) but overdrive will set it at 740. i'm going to do some playing today to see if i can get it higher.

If you want a higher clocked hd4850 why don't you go for the hd4870? same card, higher speeds.

A bit out of my price range , kids to feed , wife to support :).
It's nice to know even the normal 625 gets to at least 700.
The thing about overclocking this card is that it's not just a few fps that you get from let's say 625 to 750 , it actually makes the game more playable like crysis or crysis warhead.
If it wasn't for this 2 games and maybe stalker clear sky this overclock wouldn't even matter because the rest of the games runs at over 60 frames in normal resolutions and decent 4XAA.

Yup, currently playing Fallout 2 and crysis warhead. Unfortunately crysis sux with AA but my system will run it at 1440*900 Gamer really fast. My cpu is an old dual core at 3.3GHZ so can't go much higher. Fallout 2 works well with AA tho.

Another strange thing is that my old card (8500GT@700) would run crysis fine at medium detail. this card blew up tho, and the replacement they gave me wouldn't overclock :(
But my 4850 will only go 1 setting higher.

I currently game on a friends computer with 4 ghz E8400 and 4870 , over 3.5 ghz the cpu doesn't matter in crysis or crysis warhead.
I benchamrked the game with cpu at 3 ghz stock speed then 3.5 and 4 ghz , what i noticed is average framerate doesn't change that much maybe 1-2 frames betwen 3 ghz and 4 ghz BUT minimum framerate was much better with 3.5 , after that overclocking more wouldn't gain me anymore framerates.
Maybe if i used low settings and low resolution i would be cpu limited but of course i will enable all the eye candy and video card limitations kick in very fast.
I finished crysis warhead with enthusiast on everything except shadows and gamed very fluently with this 4870.
There is a big difference betwen what people say it's playable with an average of 30 frames and what some people consider playable ( like me ) and enjoyable like 45-50 fps average.

I understand that you've seen something you like, Leo. This thread is not for shoppers or people making observations of one card versus the other. Leonard's previous question about what to do with his 4850 to get performance was alright, but I encourage anyone reading this to remember that this thread is for questions and comments about overclocking Radeon HD4850.

I would like to hear some more on the subject personally! How far can these cores go with only DDR3???

I see no reason the 4850 can't hit 800 with a volt mod and adequate cooling. Mine runs fine at 725 with stock cooling, the temp peaks in the low 60's so i'm assuming it's just a voltage issue as i've heard of the cards running fine in the low 90's

Just got a gigabyte 1024 mb dddr3 passivelly cooled , well not anymore bceause i've put a fan around it.
I wanted the zalman one but it wasn't in stock and i got this instead , overclock results are 100% stable 750gpu and 1040 memory and this is true i'm not joking 800 gpu furmark stable :))).
How is that possible ? when i ran crysis imediatly crashed and of course i got to 750 gpu but furmak is not a good tool to see the stability.
I didn't tried ati tool but i guess it's the same deal and about the memory , the memory overclock is so low because i didn't raised the voltage for the memory at all , they are not cooled by anyhting and until i buy some little heatsinks for the memory and figure out how to install them in that thight place 1040 is as far as i go , i got artifacts at 1060 so 20 mhz is off to be 100% stable.
From what i heard with voltage raised from gamer hud i can hit 1150 np for the memory , btw ,there is no more voltage for the gpu from the gigabyte gamer hud as i thought , you can lower it if you want but default is what everyone else gets on a standard 4850 but you can overvoltage the memory so at least this is good.
Temperature with overclock and 1 hour of furmark i got 76 C and without overclock is around 69-70.
Still the orientation of the cooler is very important to drop tmeperature because if i put the cooler to blow directly in the video card the temperature actually raises , strange.
I reoriented the cooler a bit and wow i was amazed how much the temperature droped , full load of 20 minutes furmark and temperature was 58-59 C

Sorry for bumping this ancient thread, but I have a question: I've noticed that I absolutely cannot get my launch single-slot 4850 stable beyond 650/1000 or 615/1045, even with the fan at 65%. Did I just get unlucky or do I have a bad card?

Would a BIOS flash this? Also, I have a 12cm window fan blowing on the card. Would removing the 4850's plastic cover help with airflow? (I can't spare even $1 for an aftermarket HSF right now.) Should the case fan be pulling air out instead?

You've probably reached the limits with the stock cooling, I'd just be happy with what you have until you can save up for an aftermarket cooler.

I also bought one of these at launch, and immediately fitted an Accelero S1 Rev2 with 140mm Yate Loon fan on it. It operates virtually silently.

It's been running fine @ 700/1100 ever since then. I just ran Furmark stability test for 10 mins before to check if the S1 is still doing its job and it seems it is, I've attached the file with the results.

Just wait a while and buy an aftermarket cooler. When this card starts to show its age, I'll just voltmod it and take it up to about 800-850Mhz. With this cooler, that's got to be possible. It runs everything I throw at it right now to my satisfaction though.

Sorry leo, for some reason i didn;t get an alert for this thread. i don;t know if you have an answer to your question or not yet. But gigabytes gamer HUD allows 1.19v (or sometimes 1.24v) Vcore on the 4850, whereas other 4850's are stuck somewhere around 1.16v.

I played around with the card since then and found out all the overclock i can get from it , it's true the GPU has more voltage than a normal 4850 and this is the reason it can hit 750mhz so easy , memory won't go over 1040 no matter what i set for voltages or bios flash.
Overall i'm happy with the overclock and the card perf. , temperature with the fan on the radiator is still very good , won't go over 60C no matter the kind of load (crysis,furmark...).
Thanks for the reply.

Does the ATI 4850 come with less tolerable memory than the ATI 4830?

I'm running my ATI 4830s memory @ 1150 and its 100% stable. Played hours of games, 3Dmarks in infinite loops, and Folding @ Home GPU.

@ the moment the memory is running @ 73.6 GB/Sec

It's more about luck , some like me get bad memory overclock and some get very good memory overclock on cheap referance 4850 , there are some brands that put better memory on their cards , i believe gainward uses faster memory on the 4850 Golden Sample.

Yea, i can get 1200mhz on my mem, but i only use it at this for quick benchmarking. Setting the memory too high can cause a lot of damage, even if the volts are low

on my 4850 i strapped a zalman vf 1000 and can push the core to 700 with acceptable temps at around 40 at idle at 50 -55 celcius at load ( i run it at 680mhz for 24/7 use) . I'd push it more but i cant afford a new video card for awhile so i'll be happy with these results

730/1200

Hi guys,

I have got a PowerColor HD4850 PCS+ with 512MB of GDDR3 memory. Default clocks are 665/993. I used Ati Tray Tools overclock function to bump up clocks. I hit 730/1200 with any problems, however I did not tested it too much. As I noticed I can change some (I think GPU?) voltage as well. Maximum is 1.310V. I tried all possible options but I could not go higher than 730/1200. I have heard that 1.3V should be enough up to 800Mhz. Can I raise memory voltage without pencil/solder mod? What are my options to hit 800+ Mhz regarding to GPU clock? It seemed to me the problem is around the GPU clock.

Thanks.

dedix , unlles you make a hard mod you won't see higher voltages , software that tells you it can give 1.310V are bullshit.
BTW , can someone make a guide to how to voltmod a gigabyte 4850 http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products...=VGA&ProductID=2900&ProductName=GV-R485MC-1GH
or a bios mod for higher voltage
bios here
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/VGA/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=2900

I have got a PowerColor card not Gigabyte. Anyway I saved my BIOS from GPU-Z, downloaded RBE and opened it.

On Clock settings tab I have got data in Clock info 00-09. But voltages are only defined in 01 and 02 rest of them contains dashes. Voltage is 1.046V in each fields. Maximum is 1.310V. Same as in Ati Tray Tools. All fields has a 665Mhz of GPU frequency and 993Mhz for RAM, except first one, (625/993) second and third ones (500/750). Which ones should I modify? I am confused which is 3D and such. As far as I know first one is for BootUp, so I am wondering why it is lower than the maximum.

I would like to reach something like this: http://gpuz.techpowerup.com/08/07/20/8xb.png. I guess it should not be a trouble for my card, because that guy who did that shot has got lower default core clock than I have.

sucks

Ok, I fixed everything. Almost everything. I modded and flashed my bios from a clean DOS boot. I even raised voltages but it did not seem to work. I restored original one and ran an auto overclock with ATI Catalyst Control Center. My card has passed 700/1060. Later I ran 3Dmark06 demo, it was ok. After that I played about 20-30 minutes with Grand Ages Rome without any problem. I started getting happy. Then I launched Brother in Arms - Hell's Highway. Just after game was loaded, screen has just frozen to death, came back for a few secs, so I could move a little bit. It happened a few times then I got a blank screen eventually, so I had to kill the game in task manager.

I even tried to auto overclock using Ati Tray Tools (it tries to find a maximum GPU/RAM clock speed while looking for artifacts) accordingly to it my card was stable @ 722/1033. I really do not get it. Is it possible that some game runs correctly while some does not?

Right after the game was stopped I noticed the following error message on the notification area:

Dedix , most of the times a bios flash with "higher voltages" won't get you higher overclocks.
The 4850 it's just limited to well to get you higher clocks and i doubt you got 1.310 V from a bios flash , it could say you have that voltage but you won't have it and still be at default ones.
Be happy with your overclock and leave it alone , you won't get higher clocks unlles you voltmod de card.
