Holy shit, one local store is now flooded with brand new old chips. Pentium 4s, Celeron 420, Pentium Dual, Core 2 Duos. They aren't expensive and are nice collector toys, but really is silicon shortage truly so bad that even Pentium 4 630 is now in demand. This is getting crazy.

@P4-630 Pentium 4 630 is now just 10 Euros, nice chip, eh?

If they are all-new, sealed PIB, it is possible that these were held up and confiscated in customs, warehoused for a few years awaiting legal clearance and proper auctioning-off. But that is quite the selection of old processors, alright.

This week I found a listing in our local eBay equivalent (MercadoLibre) for a Radeon HD 6870 engineering sample that was also held up in customs and ended up auctioned off. I'm almost buying it, might if it's still around by the end of the week.

I like Pentium D 930 better. :)
I have a Pentium D 945 with 4gb of ram, how do you think W10 will run? No TPM 2.0 for W11 though.

Will work at least as nicely as Windows 7 does. It's generally faster on slow hardware, once you properly configure it, of course.

Prerelease builds of 11 don't enforce the hardware security requirements and will work. I know a guy that installed the leaked build (21996) on a P4, it works just fine. The WDDM 2.0 requirement also isn't currently enforced, I've personally tested a Quadro FX 5600 (basically a 8800 GTX with double VRAM, original G80 processor) and it works great with the last driver, 342.01. It's WDDM 1.2, if I recall correctly.

Hi,
Q9550 works fine
TPM isn't a performance requirement it's just an 11 obnoxious security requirement.

Pentium D is the best cpu for that motherboard. I have a C2D running W10 flawlessly. May upgrade that one to a Q9550 in a bit. But the Pentium D with 4GB is as upgraded as possible. I'm just curious if it would be usable, I've only ever installed XP on it for old games and hardware.

Eh thanks, but no thanks. I just moved away from an old i7 980x. So I am not going back.

But perhaps for a retro build, it cut be an easy way to get a specific cpu a person wants.

There is one old cpu i remember. The Core 2 quad Q6600. That was the first cpu I really dreamed of on getting. But financial i cut not do it. But I got a I7 920 a year later.

Oh good, please don't mention Pentium D. Or D for desaster. I only remember this cpu for how slow it was.

I remember salivating for that Pentium E2100s since I couldn't afford E7000/E8000s at that time.
Though I ended up with Atlon X2 5000 I think since couldn't even afford Pentium too.

These aren't all old chips too, there are more, but those cost quite a bit more. To my disappointment, they are all tray versions, meaning no box, no aluminum e-waste, no documentation. I might have unironically bought some Pentium 4 for that old school box and cooler. And there is one Phenom II X3 available too.

Great for building a retro PC lol. Will go nicely with my FX5200.
Not really sure about that. It's easy to think that they are great for that, but in local used CPU market, their price is even lower. Pentium 4 is nearly worthless. The main problem with retro machines isn't CPUs, but rather motherboards. They are either expensive, on the verge of dying or somebody is trying to scam you and unload their no longer functional board. I got burned on eBay pretty bad and I wouldn't entertain a thought of buying from there again.

I wouldn't mind throwing that E6550 or E8400 on my Rampage Formula. My E8600 E.S. was stolen from me, and I just have an X3360 for it. But it wont do 600FSB like my sweetness did.

Most likely unusable. It's just two Pentium 4s in one chip. Pentium 4 itself was only somewhat okay against Athlon 64/XP, I have used Turion X2 some years ago and it wasn't fast. It felt quite poor, even in most basic things. Web browsing isn't fun and things like Youtube don't run well, unless you have some quite modern card to properly accelerate it. Here is how the worst Core 2 Duo compares to the fastest Pentium 4:

Not very well. XP gaming is probably the only thing where Pentium D is not too bad at, you really need at least Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2 for for anything more modern. Even with XP, Pentium D isn't particularly fast.

They were decent for their time.
Not really. Compared to anything made by AMD they were really sad and depressing:

Even back then there was no reason to buy them, Athlon 64 X2 was the way to go. And if that wasn't bad enough, after a year or less, Core 2 Duo was launched, which completely annihilated Ds. Pentium D and Celeron D could be best described as Intel panicking and doing everything to rush out something usable with two cores, to not lose sales. At least they were cheaper than AMD's dual cores, so they sold. That's probably the only good thing about them.

I got one used two years later after they launched and for what I remember. They where slow and a pain in the ass to use.

What a coincidence :)
Just recently I benchmarked two bare-bones rigs in Win7. The two builds used the absolute minimum components supported by the system. They can be used for web browsing with a little bit of patience. And of course they play many games from the early 3D era.

Shameless self-promotion, here!

They where slow and a pain in the ass to use
Didn't Intel pretty much get slaughtered when A64 came out? Conroe stomped them back down to the dirt though.. I had a 2600+ and 2500M back in those days but my buddy had a 3GHz Northwood and we traded blows like in Pacific Rim lol. Not really.. he destroyed me in many things @ stock lol. I do remember him not laughing so hard when my shiny new Sandy 3700 backed by Abit stopped by to say hi :)

I really don't remember about that. Before the core 2 duo/quad released. I really dit not have much interest in pc hardware. That first for real came with the launch of the core 2 series. That's when my interests in hardware really began to peak.
