Hi there,

I have the above GPU, which I am running at stock settings.

However, there appears to be a rather huge margin between GPU, Memory, VR and Hotspot temperatures.
According to monitoring software, while the die, VR and memory sensors report 63-66C after a 20 minute gaming load, the hotspot temperature eventually reaches 110C or beyond, the max I've ever noticed being 113C

I have dusted the card out but I haven't gone much further than that.

Any recommendations/suggestions a kind member of the community could provide?

Many thanks.

Is this card new, did you open it up at some point ?

There is definitely something wrong with it, if it's new and still in warranty I might just RMA it, if not you can try to repaste it.

I have this same card, but the 6800 XT version. I was getting 99 celsius hotspot temps. I decided to cut a wooden pencil to size to prop the end of the the gpu up a little bit (as you know these are giant cards), there was a small bit of sag on mine, it was hardly visible, but the pencil acting as a pillar pushed it up just a couple of millimeters, and my hotspot temp has not gone over 84 celsius since.

It's new to me but it's not "new". The factory seal sticker is intact and I have not opened the card. I do have a warranty on it though.

Interesting. I am using the included GPU brace, but it may be not enough?

please ignore my misconfigured fans, Arctic has a very different idea on what "white" is.
Driver version?
22.11.1, but I have tried the most recent, and 22.5.1 as well.

the gpu brace only helped the front some when I tried to use it. I eventually got pissed and just took the brace off. now i just use a pencil:

I also have an extra fan on mine at the bottom of the case as you can see, but that was there even with the 99 celsius before, so that really doesn't help hotspot

Try what Space Lynx said first, some of these huge heatsinks do in fact sag enough to cause issues.

If it's still like that I'd personally return it you can, that temperature delta is extremely high, you can RMA it but these kinds of issues were the card is not outright broken do not end well. Or you can repaste it at risk of losing warranty.

EDIT: Depending on how new the card is the paste might have dried out already so it might not make a difference if you prevent the sag.

There's not enough space to fit a pencil, but here is my patented lightbulb box + folded paper solution.

I will run the load again then report back. Thanks for the advice so far.

there is enough room for a pencil, you would just have to measure it, mark it, and cut it down to size. and it should lift the gpu up by 1-2 millimeters, at least mine did.

I don't think your option will work, cause you really need to be about the same spot where my pencil is, just about two inches from the left. and there needs to be a pressure point, where its actually lifting the card a super tiny amount.

it might work though, at end of day its just about support/leveling/raising.

if that doesn't work, i'd measure a wooden pencil and try my method, if that doesn't work then RMA or repaste... 110 is def too hot.

what game are you playing or benchmark that takes it to 110? i want to try the same program and see if i can replicate your results without my pencil support.

these are my scores on time spy extreme stress 20 cycle test.

113 celsius hotspot is def off. something is wrong with that card imo, I guess repaste (if you know how) if you don't know how, then I'd say either return it to store if you are in return period or RMA it directly with MSI and let them know hotspot is hitting 113 celsius.

I am honestly not happy to see that 94 temp, I had a strong fan curve on too.

I have done it before on a 5700XT from XFX.
Any recommendations on paste though? I've heard about the pump out effect being especially pronounced with thinner pastes.

SYY 157 is the paste to go for direct die Applications.
NT H1 will pump out within 4 weeks. Kryonaut maybe lasts 6.

just do what GerKNG said, I think MX-6 is fine also

I want to do a repaste on mine, but it has a warranty sticker over one of the screws, so just afraid to do it in-case they decide not to honor the warranty if I have an issue down the line. legally they can't do that, but lets face it, they can make up some bs reason just to spite those of us who do remove that sticker. so for now I am not re-pasting. also i guess this was a stress a test... so 94 isn't end of world... as long as gaming keeps it at 84-90 range max i don't think I will bother worrying about it.

yours at 113c though wow, truly insane. hope you get that sorted. let us know what happens :toast:

Can you return it or not ? That would be preferable to doing this yourself, RMA will most likely not get you anywhere but it's worth talking to MSI first and see what they say.

By the way is the card actually downclocking during gaming ?

It wasn't purchased from MSI or a retail partner, it's from a second hand electronics retailer so I'm not the first owner. MSI won't honor the warranty lol.

As said above, those stickers don't matter as I'm not the first owner. Besides, it said "Factory Seal" not "Warranty Void If Removed". After a quick Google, it seems that MSI don't care if you break this sticker as long as you don't damage internal components or make large modifications.

I will pick up some paste and report back probably tomorrow when it arrives from Amazon.

Considering this:

High hotspot temps aren't a surprise. Cheaping out on a card of this tier is a mind boggling move from MSI.
Just to clarify, I didn't come here to shit on your GPU choice, but I'd return it and get a refund.
There are a few on our used marked with a very tempting price tag. But after some investigation, I've deleted it from any future plans.

MSI has been pulling this crap since gpp was a thing.

And now they give the 7900 series the Gaming Trio Classic treatment, with the same goddamn cooler. How much would've it cost'em to adapt the 4000 series cooler to the Radeons?

It's probably not an issue of money, more than likely there are agreements in place so that they can't use anything they've previously used on an Nvidia card on an AMD branded product.

But didn't/doesn't MSI use the same Tri Frozr for both RX 6000 and RTX 3000 series? Granted they didn't make Suprim Radeons, but the Gaming line used the same cooler. Ventus and Mech were also only different in name.
