I did it. Twice. It categorically did not work for me :(
disappointed. time to shove the case behind the desk again to muffle the noise and learn to live with that.

What card did you try it on? Didn't really do anything for my 4090 strix either.

So I tried gluing also the SAP caps from my 4090 strix, still didn't really do anything. Don't know what I could've done wrong, maybe the glue was too watery, prolly not possible tho. Or maybe I'm just noticing it more since its water cooled now lol. Oh well, maybe the 5090 will be quieter.
Sorry it didn't work for you. Maybe it's something else in your system, like the PSU.

Got a post-op photo for us?
sorry, i don't. didn't even think of that at the time.
it might have partially worked. i couldn't tell where it was coming from before, but now it's CLEARLY from the two coils near the power plugs. maybe all the other were also noisy, making it harder to pinpoint the sound, and this fixed them, but not the loudest two. in fact it seems to be even louder than before. idk for sure, i didn't bother to measure anything. i'm just glad my card still works.
i might try again at a later date. maybe burrow those two coils in something else other than glue, like thermal paste or something.

My old Strix 970 and Strix 1070Ti had some coil whine. Best way to get rid of it was to just limit FPS to monitor's refresh rate.

sadly that's insufficient given the higher FPS brackets that the current cards swim in. besides my 4090 is obnoxious even at 100fps on my 240hz monitor

This does not work 99.9% of the time.
It did for my all my 10 series GPU's, 200FPS limit solved the issues

Some things like unigine heavens exit screen or skyrims load screens would *scream* without it

Interesting. I've never had that kind of luck. It's always been consistent.

Watched a video that suggested that CW comes from the mosfets instead.. so far nobody’s been successful with their 4090s right?

Not sure how. MOSFETs are a sealed and encased part. I suppose it's possible, but very unlikely.

I have, twice. One Asus, one PNY. The Asus still made a little bit of noise, but the owner was happy with it as is was dramatically less noisy and the fans in her system drowned it out what little remained. The PNY was completely silent after.

Electronics and hardware layman here with a question: does gluing the choke coils have the potential to make them heat up more than factory recommended? Does it have an insulating effect or not really?

I don't have an issue with coil whine, this is just wanting to learn more.

A choke should not produce heat of any significance - no more than a transformer. They work by absorbing higher voltage as magnetic "charge" and releasing it as the voltage drops. A properly designed choke loses very little of this as heat, especially as the smaller ones cannot form the (wasteful) eddy currents of a larger one.

Great, thank you. I'll keep this idea in mind if my PowerColor ever starts whining. So far so good.

The choke's magnetism pulling it slightly one direction then releasing it as the voltage fluctuates is what causes the vibration, which is at extremely high frequency due to the voltage ripple from a power supply.

If you needed more explanation.

I'll second that limiting framerate has helped me. As Mussels said, the end screens on Unigine Heaven and Valley always jump to like 5000 FPS and cause GPUs to literally scream.

I've noticed that underclocking my GPU (PowerColor RX 6800 XT) helps significantly. The coil whine at 2150MHz vs 2500MHz is night and day. It's probably related to power consumption, which drops from 230-270W to 190-200W under load.

Still, maybe I should try the superglue trick at some point.

Hi, may I know which ASUS 4090 you did it on? Tuf or strix? I’m preparing to do this when I fly back home… bit nervous tbh. You did it for all the parts in the yellow and red box drawings in the previous photos or were u selective?

Fair enough. I'm not calling either of you liars or anything similar, just saying I've never seen it in modern cards. Old cards, like pre-GeforceFX, it happened. Just haven't seen(heard) it since.

I did the whole card to be safe. I usually do.

Not really. I bought a 3pack of generic superglue last time. The brand really doesn't matter. It's the type. Make sure it's liquid, not gel.
got it thank you

Give it a shot - heavens a super small download, and you just need to run it and quit it

That final screen is literally how i test GPU's for coil whine, just make sure you have no frame rate limiters on
