if you don't have 16gb of ram you have no business being near a computer
and I agree while using tools like nlite and *XPE are nothing new
its usually just people fucking with shit they don't understand

contrary to what the arm chair of the internet will tell you accually want your os to use as much ram as possible
else you are wasting it
It's not fair to say.
It was less than half a decade ago that I was an international student. I washed my hair, cloth and dishes with the same big bottle of shampoo which I grabbed from the discount shelf.

I think a guy with 8gb ram and a laptop that looks like an Atari console can still use 3d modeling software....

I used to weight less than my PC weights now.

I was running DaVinci Resolve and Autodesk Inventor on a skylake-era i3 (m3?), with 4 GB of RAM and plenty of bloatware. You would be surprised at how much you can do with how little.

For clarification, it was the computer I was issued for some schooling I was doing at the time.

Hi,
Microsoft say minimum 4gb's memory for 11 so yeah that's funny
Sure more is better but not at all necessary.

Hey thanks for your opinion.

You seem to be missing both context and the ideal.

Now kindly stop with your silliness & negativity.

I think "W11 is getting slimmer" is overselling it.
I've got multiple ISO files for each major version of 11, and this is the lowest it's ever been
22H2 has genuinely reduced RAM usage

My main system always uses more, I'm not sure if i need a reinstall since it's had this OS for about a year now and had serious issues with bloatware (Asus, Gigabyte, Corsair and Logitech all having their own seperate meltdowns), or it's just because it sees more ram, and uses more

To everyone else on the RAM topic:
Don't mistake what i said for being opposed to the *caching* part of this - I wanna see that 7.5GB of cached content fill my RAM. What I don't want is 4-6GB of my 16GB systems used by processes that don't even need to be running.

1676431285717.png

Even my 4th gen laptop has 16GB of RAM, but that doesnt mean I want 8GB used by the OS reducing how much is left for my programs/games to use

Oh and on the browsers, other than edge defaulting to bing (ew), it's chromium. I'm glad IE died and got replaced by something far superior, and when edge runs better and uses less resources than chrome does, it's the winner for now.

I washed my hair, cloth and dishes with the same big bottle of shampoo
If you get the right stuff you can do hair, body, hands, dishes, car, keyboard, mice...

I don't want this off-topic, but i do agree what we don't budget shame. I've got a core 2 duo laptop here with 2x2GB DDR2 667 that runs 11 as a joke/test, and with this low RAM usage it actually handles 1080p youtube and office use perfectly fine on a budget SSD. With 10 no longer being sold and no other older OS's supported, it's linux or the trash pile for older hardware and i'm definitely opposed to that E-waste, and all for 11 being light enough to run on ancient unsupported hardware with minimal effort

This program can Disable Updates (in my Testing you have to not be on the Internet) then click on the "Disable Tab" then either click on Both HW/SW or either one. I choose Software Only

If you go to try to use the update section in my testing it'll break the Disable update portion

You posted the wrong link. Here's the correct link for WAU Manager;

That's OK. I am still fighting with Nobara Linux and constantly rebooting with some reboots not even working and have to hard power off.

I'm about to "reset" this win 11 install, too much garbageware running in the background despite my best efforts, and a good 20GB of disk space i cant track down in random leftover files/folders from those same programs
I'm wondering about the performance hit of moving all my VR software to a VM for example, to avoid that shit running 24/7 on the PC when i use it once a month at best, and can revert it back after something like installing crapware to update a monitors firmware
(I have no happy answer to this, i want to avoid all their software bloat but need it on the same PC that has all the steam games - a VM can at least share the storage for the games)

I've tried this with dual booting between 10 and 11, but honestly 10 annoys the shit out of me in comparison - it really doesnt like being forgotten without updates for a while and often takes multiple reboots to get it up and running (which kicks me back to 11 every time)

This. In the current economic climate, microsoft has no business or no right to artificially limit Windows installs in consumer PCs. The effect this is having is negative in every way.
They haven't done so.
All they've done is said they offer no technical support to help you get it working, they certainly still include all the drivers for that hardware in windows updates - all it'd take for them to truly stop this, would be to remove the drivers that work on that old hardware and they haven't done so

Microsoft themselves are the ones who put out guides on how to bypass the requirements in the first place, and have done nothing against programs like rufus or ventoy automating that for people
you're upset they've done something they only do in your imagination

Which part, i had two convos going on there
I'm all for unofficial support for 11 on older hardware at the users risk

I found out i've already been running a VR alternative without realising it - "Virtual desktop" for quest doesnt require the actual oculus software, I already had it installed before i purchased so i didnt realise i could go pure steamVR and skip that bloat (It's a huge download and several always running services, and i own nothing in the oculus store)

Nvidia drivers are a tough one because they do add SOME bloat, but i also use many of GFE's features so W1zz's clean install program isn't a perfect answer (The performance overlay, recording and streaming)

ISO Creation goes nyoom

They haven't done so.
Yes, they have. Without workarounds and custom patches, Windows 11 will not install on "unsupported" hardware. If you don't believe me, try it with a stock ISO downloaded from microsoft directly, not UUP.

Links or it didn't happen. Also, if this is a recent change, it's news to me because for the past 18months they have been working to prevent installs on unsupported hardware.

Microsoft released those workarounds THEMSELVES. Before the OS was even publicly launched
Ways to install Windows 11 - Microsoft Support

Um, yeah. That is not relevant. That was for the ALPHA and BETA versions of the software. After Win 11 hit the consumer preview channel, they went strict and have been since.
And there's this;
This happens if you manage to install Win11 on unsupported hardware without PROPERLY patching the install media.

So no, that is not a solution.

I'll take it. I assume it's using more because it has access to more, but 300MB less is a win

Hi,
That's only for two items though
Secure boot is missing oops.

Another thing missing from the old ms article is the fact it's missing an important step and that is to change the installers update setting to not search for updates.
If not done now days the installer will exit/ puke.

Is the Windows 11 in Aussy (Austrailan), Bricked English (American) or Real English (British)?
Aussie windows uses the american format, with us for the region - because we use the same keyboards ($ vs pounds/euro)

Best debloater so far, since it allows you to choose whats removed vs just blindly changing things

By your logic, microsoft block RAID arrays and windows XP is a conspiracy against SATA controllers
Why even bother being in this thread? You just want to bitch about 11, even if its completely unrelated to the reality of how the OS works, or if its the same as previous generations have worked. Oh dear lord no, UNSUPPORTED HARDWARE REQUIRES A FEW MOMENTS OF EXTRA TIME.

What? That statement has zero logic.. For starters, XP has FULL SATA support. Seriously with that?
Why even bother being in this thread?
I STARTED this thread for the purpose of discussing all aspects, positive AND negative, of Windows 11.

Um, perhaps you need to review the previous 161 pages of this thread since I started it. You seem to have missed a few things.
