Also important would be for TPU to check for texture swapping and texture detail. Many games use it to mitigate the impact of a lack of VRAM but the side effect is that some textures will be blurry as they load in. HardwareUnboxed has demonstrated this happening in multiple recent games on 8GB cards. If you have a benchmark where both cards are set to high detail but the 8GB one is texture swapping or has lower quality textures that's not an apples to apples comparison.

A lot of people seem to be fixated on the performance hit you see in games like the one tested in this article but you also have to consider that there may also be visual quality differences on the exact same graphics settings when running on an 8GB card vs a 10, 12, or 16GB card.

That's fair and logical. I think his point though was to poke fun at the contrast to how Starfield's lack of DLSS at launch is assumed to be for one reason only by contrasting it with this.
I think this is an EXTREMELY important point, and one that I think applies to DLSS and frame generation as well. We all assume that all "frames" are equal and rhat it's a known u it of measurement, but how are we sure? Are we absolutely sure that Nvidia and AMD cards are outputting the same exact QUALITY of frame? When you add in DLSS/FSR/XeSS and especially frame generation, that's no longer the case, so is it even scientifically accurate to be comparing one card using XeSS vs another card using DLSS? If they're not outputting the same exact quality of image, how can they even be compared accurately?

I feel like all this software trickery raises some serious questions with respect to testing methodology and comparability of results across different reviews and content creators

Game does have RT, only AMD hardware can't enable RT due to driver bugs

Didn't realize AMD GPU owners cared about RT....... Hopefully they get their drivers in order.

Also just looking at the last couple years Nvidia has done a much better Job in sponsored titles supporting competing technologies unlike AMD and why there was a collective groan when it was announced Starfield was an AMD sponsored game.

Yeah I do find that interesting also Spiderman is basically the same engine just a less advanced version of it and RT runs fine on AMD hardware in that.

I don't see Nvidia blocking RT on AMD hardware though in almost every scenario it just makes Nvidia cards look better when they both support it.

Thank you for this. I raised this issue in the 4060Ti 16GB card review as well and got told to blame the developer.
Add... Nixxes??? To the list of shitty developers I guess...?

Thanks @W1zzard for taking the time to test on older cards like the 2080 Ti and 5700 XT as well.

Eight more lanes of PCIe would have occupied a negligible amount of die space for a die that's over 200 mm^2. AMD's penny pinching with their x600 series is pretty silly.
Calling out AMD for penny pinching on the x600 series is odd considering Nvidia is doing it on their 4060Ti, a card slotting in at a much higher price nowadays.
Less "over 200 mm^2" more "400$ MSRP 8GB x8 lanes.

Although of course I'd rather both stop doing this. Wonder if the 6600 was actually more intended as a mobile GPU.

I think most are more interested in seeing how the RT performance deficit trends with newer games. We see that depending on implementation AMD either does quite well or falls behind pretty far (primarily the latter).

"With Direct Storage 1.1 the GPU handles decompression as well, which helps reduce load on the CPU and smoothen out things. We did test the game on a SATA SSD and it ran still perfectly fine without any noticeable degradation."

Does it not support 1.2? as it has performance improvements.

I'm in that camp I would like to see RT comparisons and hope that it performs well on AMD hardware whenever it does get patched in.

Nvidia's limitation of 8 lanes for the 4060 and the 4060 Ti is just as lamentable given that the 1050 Ti had 16 PCIe lanes with a smaller die size than any of these GPUs. This is why I don't buy the argument about limited space at the edge of the die. The die sizes are:
It's rather telling that the oldest and smallest die is the only one with 16 PCIe lanes.

In the conclusion w1zzard said that Intel Arc and RTX support RT in this game, only AMD owners need to wait.

Also there is a page dedicated to RayTracing comparison lol

R&C is a Nvidia Sponsored title for the PC port... The game doesn't launch with RT (which it has on the PS5), yet Nvidia isn't receiving any media rage? AMD caught hell for a game that isn't even out yet - Starfield.
Could be that AMD released a driver update the broke raytracing in R&C. They borked RL as well recently (very annoying).
As AMD hasn't released a fix yet there's probably a reason for it (reverting breaks something more important for example) so they had two options.
- Delay launch of R&C for AMD to release an updated driver
- Just launch R&C but disable raytracing on AMD

As most don't really care about raytracing on AMD and considering it's an Nvidia sponsored title I can't really fault Nixxes for just releasing it.

In short I don't think Nvidia has anything to do with it aside that if AMD sponsored it they would've maybe delayed the launch.

Nvidia has more money to employ people for propaganda.
On topic, i am disappointed in Nvidia, when you put your money on the line to sponsor a game i expect the other side to be destroyed, yet i look at 1% lows and AMD kills it, what the hell Nvidia, do something, make them release a patch to kill AMD performance.
Well at least they blocked RT for AMD.
It's getting boring, these guys should take notes from Zuck and Elon, cage fighting should be what every megacorporation should strive for, the fu...k is this lame show of "you don't get RT" pathetic.
Thank god we have Intel, they are like "we already won, we don't even need drivers"

...what is going on here?

-These 7900s lows are ...interesting....
-2080Ti>3070
-Great review with many GPUs but where is the 4060Ti 16GB?

RT will come for the AMDs in due time. There's no chance to not be supported.

the RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB gets 75 FPS at highest setting, usually you'd expect RTX 2080 Ti 11 GB to run at roughly the same FPS, but here it gets 102 FPS, a 33% difference

@W1zzard Would you have time to run the 16GB 4060 Ti against this? It would address whether this was a VRAM issue.

AMD themselves are working on a driver update to fix the crashing issue, so it's obvious nvidia is behind it and nvidia fanboys are having double standards. The amd crusade at it again

Without raytracing for AMD graphics cards ... what a shame... The GPU divison is a total mess !

Clearly this is the result of NVIDIA paying developers to not include features for competitors.

That's the immediate conclusion everyone should jump to based on recent history, right?

This though if had an AMD GPU i couldn't play a fundamental part of the game.

Repeat after me: graphics aren't gameplay

Nixxes is typically pretty good about supporting all cards well and in general AMD cards perform well in this.... Must be something else going on.
On PC they use the GPUs to decompress what the PS5 has dedicated chip for. Since AMD cards utilize compute for RT it might be that the two tasks interfere in a way that they do not on RTX GPUs.
On the other hand RT on RTX GPUs has quite a few bugs at launch as well, so it might be that any of those simply leads to crashes on AMD hardware instead of just visual glitches.

My impressions from a combination of this review and DF video.

Lowest quality setting has absolutely horrid textures, so I can only assume the high VRAM usage is again down to unified memory architecture memory management which I think is going to dominate many new AAA titles moving forward.

Lack of stutters is likely DS, so its good thats doing what it is supposed to do, however DS logically surely will consume VRAM, so will also be a contributor to the VRAM usage, as using system RAM would require the CPU.

Even the lowest resolution setting at your max settings is going to be too much for my 10 gig 3080, although hoping the setting below that is manageable.

VRAM usage might go up further if they fix the problem with not all high res textures loading on PC port.

Think I might buy this game just as a technical test on my PC.

@W1zzard did state the 8 gig cards suffered. 6700XT has 12 gigs VRAM.

Does it not support 1.2? as it has performance improvements.
It's 1.1.. 1.2 was just released in April, no way for anyone to integrate that so soon

This is not what @W1zzard said in this review. If W1zzard has any information on this i would appreciate it.
There is no additional information that I know of
