TPU's Nostalgic Hardware Club

Today's scores:

- this lovely 430HX gem - Chaintech 5IFM1. Probably needs an ODIN CR2032 transplant but that's no biggie.

file.php

- another 360 controller that needs some TLC
- XFX Radeon HD7970 that's missing its fans yet works perfectly (tested OK and working on ABIT IP35 ProXE)
- Gigabyte Geforce GTX1050 2GB GDDR5 - also works fine

Just checked my 775 motherboard with the 560 direct cut TI GPU i bought a couple of months ago for £5 all good.:) The systems is so quite.:)Unlike my Ryzen PC :(why would my Ryzen PC be so noisey, anyone got any ideas o_OThat GPU was a bargain:)

What are the best GPU,s for X3450 and E3 1230 3,2 ? With my 860k will be 960.

Legendary score with 2500K & 290X :)

From Saturday's scores. It was this 7970 and a 1050 that cleaned up rather well. The 1050 is ready to go. Only this 7970 asks for a new heatsink and fans - methinks I might get away with transplanting another cooler that uses 4 pin fan wiring. I might be able to source a MSI, a Gigabyte and maybe a Club3D/VTX as well.

What I'm slightly concerned of though, would be the VRM thermal pads... the RAM ones I can easily get away with.

Not bad, 7970 is a capable card even this day! :)

i would take off the xfx casing and just put 2 fans there

Thanks, but I already placed an order on a broken Sapphire HD7970 Vapor-X to use as donor card. Gonna love getting that huge mofo secured on the XFX. The only one I've seen that big was a MSI R9 280x (which is just a souped up HD7970).

I'd have done it if the card used something like 2 pin wiring on the fans, like the Gigabyte HD7870 I have does.
Except the XFX seems to have 4 pins, and even more unfortunate, the only fans (no pun intended) that would have fit mechanically were a combo between 2 ASUS cards, a GTX670 that developed bad RAM and a HD7850/R7 265 that works perfectly fine - the issue is the card uses 5 pins, and the wiring on the fans is done such in a way that they only work on ASUS DirectCU II cards (both the 670 and the R7 265 being DCuII cards)

isnt the xfx a ref pcb and saphires not so maybe you get the cooler on but not the vrm and specially the flat silver chokes underneath ? and these get hot.

XFX isn't reference either. I checked that numerous times before ordering the Sapphire - both PCB part numbers match.

Also, all the screw holes on the XFX and Sapphire cards match.

I would do this my way, without buying anything more:
1. Checking 5-pin Asus fans connector pinout(Google). Extra pin is for second fan speed sensor.
2. Checking XFX:s pinout. It probably is standard 4-pin mini pwm connector(I would like every card to have this).
3. Making Asus wires from connector side to match with XFX:s connector. Minus that second fan speed cable.
4. Removing XFX:s white fan connector plastic and connecting Asus fans to the card.

ASUS' fans won't work on anything else. I've tried more than once to adapt the fans from the 7850 to a Club3D/VTX HD7950 that uses the same header as the XFX, and the fans will simply not work on that header, no matter what I did.

At this point, I've already ordered the Sapphire 7970. If anything, I might have a spare card to work on in case the VTX goes belly up.

Pulled the old Dell Dimension 5150 out of the closet.

Going to use it for some old XP games hopefully, as well as this, after I get it cleaned up and put in a GPU and RAM.

First I tried using the 8600GT silent, but the case didn't support a dual slot GPU.

So I tried the Radeon HD 4850:

But it constantly bootlooped with that one. So I unfortunately had to put in the original ATI x300.

CPU is a Pentium D 940, 3.2 Ghz cooled with a big heatsink and case fan.

Tried upgrading the RAM, but it didn't work either. I think 1gb modules are the limit for the board.

Running Windows XP Professional SP3 32 bit. It is slow. Tempted to get a small SSD and ditch the HDD. This model originally came with XP MCE, but it was also sold with Vista when that came out. Can't imagine how that would go.

Vista 32bit should work fine on that machine with 4GB RAM.

i wanna see moar of that cpu heatsink mr. remeca plz

It comes off in one piece with the shroud with 2 screws.

And I was mistaken about the CPU. It's actually a Pentium D 805, 2.66 Ghz. Thermal paste wasn't too bad, a bit dry and crumbly.

A Next workstation. It hangs out in our Apple computer museum at our help desk at the University I work at. There is tons of cool old stuff in it. From a OG Macintosh to a 30" Cinema display to the first iBook. No PC stuff unfortunately. It would be Dell equipment, so I guess that's fine then. lol. The Next Station is pretty neat. I have a fully functioning Apple Cube with LCD to match in my office. I rescued four of them from the dump and managed to get one working.

IIRC, that system can take a PentiumD 3.2ghz, which are cheap and would be an excellent upgrade to that system. Also, see if you can find a Geforce 8800GT or 9800GT. Most of them are single slot and will work perfectly with that system.

For example;
You can get a Pentium D 940 for $15 shipped;

You can get a quality model of 9800GT for $25 shipped.

So for very little money, you can make a massive(relatively) upgrade for that system.

Also, you may wish to update the BIOS and test those 2GB DIMMs again.
This is the latest version, A07 and contains a lot of fixes and microcode updates for newer CPU's and RAM.

I got these from the market today all for £5 along with a 80GB IDE HDD.Does anyone know about the soundcard ? o_O I guess as it is going for £6 on eBaty ot can,t be much of a card.I think getting all that for a £5 poind is a bargin:)All though not tested yet.o_O
