Cheating, stealing and threatening innocent people to give me money. Stealing bags from old ladies and candy from children. Rob banks and selling stolen cars... ops i have maybe played to much grand Theft auto.

More seriously i work as a car mechanic at small workshop.
Lots of mechanics still do that. The major dealerships will steal bags from old ladies, dont work at major dealerships.

The money doesn't bring happiness though the bills just have bigger numbers.
So much this man... and there's really a turning to point to that. Once you buy a house, the first couple years I was like, OK, this is the life. A few years down the line I'm like, OK, now I'm fixing all my own shit, great. Mo money mo problems, really. At the same time the problems aren't as pressing, because you've got money.

Ironically money feels best to me when its unspent, in some weird way :D

There's far greater value in time. That is, if that time is valuable.

Hehe I've never quite been on that train of thought 'what happens when I stop working' and having peace and quiet at retirement. I value my peace and quiet prior to that, quite a lot... The idea of saving up a lifetime of work benefits just to pay off a decade or two when ancient... I'd much rather spend it when I'm not using it on medicine and die early...

I think a lot of that comes down to where we live, social security systems and how retirement funding is arranged, too.

Lol. I have never been at a place where they steal bags from old ladies. But i have been at a place, where the boss only goal was to maximize profit. Even if that means lying to costumers for more sale.

Yeah (unless you have reached the miles for an oil change. Oil change is desided on to factors, miles or at a age level like each year) or said brakes are worn out, but could go several miles still before need replacement.

There are all ways a black sheep, no matter what branches we talk about. What ever it is auto, housing market or third.

I've been thinking about retirement since the day I started working.

It's admirable when someone finds passion in their line of work, but personally, I find way more passion outside of work (building computers, playing games, watching Nascar, spending quality time with my girlfriend, road trips, etc.). The purpose of work is to support these passions with money (of course it's not a bad thing if it doesn't suck, either). :)

That's the thing with me, way back in the 70's when I left school there weren't any PC's to speak of, the most advanced and affordable tech available to the masses was a TV or a calculator, my only passion as a 15/16 year old was sport and I was a pretty good all rounder but excelled (to a degree) in distance running. I was brought up in a small town where 70% of the population were over 60 and most of my age left to find work where they could.

So I joined the Army which turned out to be a way of life as opposed to a passion, I got paid to do all the physical stuff and travel a bit (prior to that I had never left the UK) and then one day a couple of years after I finished training I got promoted and for the first time I thought "damn I might be good at this", well nearly 28 years later and a further 9 promotions and the rest is history so to speak.

My second and last job lasted for 14.5 years and was pretty chill in comparison so out of sheer luck everything turned out OK for me, I look back without regret, I guess for us that are lucky enough to have that there is not much else to ask for in terms of a working life.

I "double majored in unemployment" as my parents put it - Philosophy and Anthropology, after going in for Marine Biology. Looked for a job for a year. Almost went Navy officer, decided against it last minute. Got accepted to law school, married and divorced a bipolar alcoholic with borderline personality disorder while in law school, and graduated with mediocre grades at a time where if you weren't in the top 20% of your class no one would call you back for interviews. Passed the bar but couldn't find a job.

Ended up doing tech and billing support for Verizon for a couple years. Hated that so much I finally quit, moved back home to South Carolina and found a job through a friend selling flooring for a little mom and pop place. That was supposed to be temporary, but I ended up doing it for like 5 years. I'd probably still be there, except I came out as trans and was fired two weeks later for a supposed handbook rule violation. Boss acted supportive, then changed the handbook so he could fire me "with cause" and I wouldn't be able to collect unemployment.

Moved to Arizona to live with my then long distance girlfriend. Sold stupid orthopedic shoe inserts for like 9 months. Relationship didn't work out, ended up moving back across the country to stay with my now girlfriend/fiancee. Found a job through a friend with a huge medical insurance company doing basic data analysis. Basically I look at one spreadsheet full of discrepancies that fell through the cracks of their automated systems and write how they should be interpreted in another spreadsheet, and then somewhere far away already insanely rich people get a little bit richer. It's a horrible job I would wish on no one, but the pay isn't terrible and most days the work load isn't that bad.

I really want to do something that leads to direct, positive change in the world, ideally for others in the LGBTQIA community, but it's exceptionally difficult to get in to advocacy work without the right background.

Sold the first one, I didn’t owe anything at all. I will buy another in the next few years. Hopefully on some land so I can pickup another expensive hobby and have no time for that too hahahah

Is anybody here in the military?
until recently i was working for US military supplier, does that count? i've seen some stuff :D in the form of manuals and design documents hehe

I have done a lot in my career, My main focus's are Virtualization and big data. I had have? my MCSE and spent a lot of my early career in windows and migrating SMBs to virtualization and off of the "one metal box for %thing%" mindset.

I did that for just about a decade. Then I worked in the datacenter space as a devops engineer doing some pretty sweet projects. I recently left AWS; I was a systems engineer in the intelligence division and now I work at META as a systems engineer for production capacity. Dealing with core service capacity so FB, instagram etc.

I make enough? alot? it doesnt really matter, my wife can pay all our bills and we have fun, but Im almost bored with what I do. The grass isnt always greener. It started as a hobby many many many many moons ago and I had the young naive mindset of "make what I like a job" all that accomplished is now I have a garage full of tools, guns and time to play with neither.

I considered joining the merchant marine on more than one occasion. I love the sea but as much as my wife said she might support me, I know 4-6months on the water wouldnt be good for us.

Don't get me wrong I love what I do. I turned down some pretty big names before META, but I think I don't want to do it forever, or eventually slow down and do more science work. I've gained a lot of skill, everywhere from coding, to physical machine architecture and circuit design.

The money doesn't bring happiness though the bills just have bigger numbers.
idk why but i always had a feeling you were in software dev on some big shot level. like knows like i guess (im not big shot)? idk lol

but what you said is 100% true. pay cheque gets bigger but so do the bills. Happiness comes more from what you do and the people you interact with while doing that. Left my previous job a bit over a year back and i still miss that atmosphere, even though my pay cheque has doubled :(

Just turned 40. I'm a nurse only have to work every other weekend because my wife makes a lot of money. In the process of building my second house, life's pretty good. I might be able to retire in the next 4-5 years although I'll likely work at least once a month to keep up my skills/license. I've worked in healthcare for 20 years at this point tech is just a hobby.
I'm glad you found your suggamomma.

Run my own Retic & landscaping company. Been landscaping for almost 30 years : (

Mostly do homes but have done biggish commercial jobs. Landscapers still ask me how I get the M.C.G. effect (I call it that) on my freshly laid grass. Thats the easy part. Getting it level with the land takes several years of skill.

Retic is mostly my love. Some jobs are worse than brain surgery. Prob why I enjoy water cooling so much : )

I still make a decent wage thankfully but yeah even though she is younger you could say that for sure. Although in California with Fast food workers making 20 usd an hour I guess you could say my hourly wage is only ok being a little over 50% higher than that.

I have nothing to say really...im an astronaut and I'm waiting for my 3rd space expedition mission. I've been on the Moon,Mars and now my crew is preparing for the big one - the Sun. It will take some time to go there and back. I will sent some pictures after our successful "landing" Wish us luck.
Good luck and don't forget your sunscreen.

Younger too. You must have a "big game". Congrats!

31 years old, I'm a contract killer...

For real I do kill, but it's pest control ;) I'm VP of a company, have been doing pest control since high school and hope to stay in it till the day I retire. I've worked construction on the side to make more money during the winter months. I always have enjoyed tech, but I can't stay in one place for long. Everyday is different and you're constantly problem solving how and where are the pests getting in etc. The hours constantly change as your schedule revolves around the customers, some days might be 4hrs or 14hrs long... It's important to stay fit so you can climb around attic's or crawl underneath homes etc. I've seen some spectacular homes and some absolute messes, I've meet amazingly kind and scummy people. It's definitely not for everyone, but it's got job security covid was a boost as people where home more and noticed pest problems. AI and robots can't do this job, most chemicals we use are much stronger and longer lasting than you can pick up at any store. We try to create a connection with each customer so they know we truly care and are there to help solve any problems.

I always thought I might get into tech, but I decided I like it as a hobby and not a carrier. I'm able to buy the things I want and play the games I want whenever I have free time.
I've learned everything I know on the job never went to college, I've thought about going and taking night courses to learn a few skills for business, but seems you can learn most of it online or just on the job from keeping good people around.
I was about to ask for an estimate but then I read the second paragraph.

Age: 36, Airbus A320/1 Captain for national airlines, I have flown Boeing 777 and 787 before too.

My hobby are just building PC and playing games, I have built quite a few PCs for my colleagues, leading them onto the road of PCMR...

I was on a 787 crossing the Atlantic in 2016 I believe it was, the plane went straight down for about 7 or 8 seconds, everyone was screaming. A year or two later that model of plane or its relative the 777 I can't remember honestly, was banned by all governments of the world from flying due to two crashes caused by computer malfunctions. I have a fear of flying to this day, for if I can not trust Boeing, than who can I trust? There are only two companies ffs.

Any advice for me? I never used to have a fear of flying before that incident, but when you feel your life is about to end and everyone is screaming.... its really hard to let that go.

That was the 737-800/900.

You've got a greater chance of dying driving to pick up a new GPU than taking a commercial flight every now and then.

Yeah, it aint getting any easier as I get older.. :(

Especially in the outback having to worry about deadly spiders and venomous snakes...... I'd love that excuse to give my wife... Can't do the yard today I might die. :toast:

All joking aside that's how most the world views Australia.

I'm a commando ;)

also live like a king, die like a pauper. If you have money, enjoy it, you might be dead tomorrow, and you can't take it with you.
