AMD AM5 / Intel Gen 14 Upgrade

The past shows us that AMD actually care about their platforms from AM4 and make them last same should be the case for AM5, the current Intel platform is kinda just showing that Intel haven't really evolved because usually Intel never release 3 so called generation for the same socket only 2 with their TIK TOK system they been doing for years.

Not saying modders haven't found a way making 8/9th gen CPU's work in Z170 boards with bios hacks and such since they are using the same socket.

For RAM/SSD/GPU and many other types of upgrades, it doesn't matter.

Suppose if I should find that in 4 years the 12600KF is no longer sufficient for 1080p gaming, I can still buy a used 14700F and use that. I don't think you're going to need anything more powerful than the 14700F in the next 7 years. It is extremely powerful in multi-core performance and relatively easy to cool.

The 12600KF now averages 160 FPS for 1080p max settings gaming in the latest titles. It's not like you're going to need something more powerful in 6 years to get over 80 FPS on average.

Compiling ZFS takes a few seconds on the 12600KF. So does it matter if it takes 15 seconds or 5 seconds for the full compilation that you need to do very rarely?

What I'm saying is that the value of the upgrade-ability of the AMD platform is greatly exaggerated.

But still a good selling point for AMD, I was about to buy gen 14 from Intel but upon reconsidering I found out - doesn't mean I am 110% right- that AMD gives you some value and with some BIOS updates you can easily switch your CPU to hopefully a better one.

Intel is the one who started changing cpu sockets like bananas and it was never in our favor as consumers unless you want to stick to a mobo and cpu for over 6 or 7 years or so....

Good luck finding that 14700K for a good price jn 4 years, I tried the same with 9900K going from 8700K and the price was so stupid on ebay that I found it better to replace the whole platform at this point.

Not arguing about tech numbers or so, I hope you got my point!

I agree that it is an advantage. But most people do not use this advantage I believe.
They build their PC and use it often for more than 9 years and are more likely to do upgrades to the SSD/HDD, GPU or RAM than to the CPU.

You don't need the thermalright AM5 bracket it does nothing.

If you want to improve cooling get the Thermal Grizzly AM5 upgrade heatspreader, it's a lot more surface area.

I was in a similar situation. I had a b350 mobo and wanted to upgrade to something good for gaming. 5800x 3d was 450, with that money I could just straight up buy a 12700f + a brand new upgradable mobo. So, upgradability was kinda pointless since I could just buy a new motherboard.

According to AMD, AM5 will be there for a while and both chips X670 and B650 are meant to last, so upgrading should be fine and we won't encounter such issues you mentioned anymore, Fingers Crossed!

But still if you went to 5800X3D, that would have been a great upgrade! right? I see here you wanted to go to Intel :D

There is a reason AMD has roughly 70% market share in the TPU poll among readers of this site AKA DIYers. Platform longevity is important to most of us. Despite anything the very vocal minority may say. You can't go wrong with either companies products, as they both offer value all the way up the stack. But all else being equal, I'd rather have the choice to drop a newer, faster CPU in later.

The point is that Intel would be the better choice since just straight up buying a new mobo would still end up at same price (actually cheaper), full warranty and an upgrade both, while the 3d would be a dead end.

and without the need to exchange a motherboard and RAM! at least AMD is Trying... IMHO what AMD did since Ryzen Gen 1 up till now is a totally respectful effort - even If you don't like them for any reason - while Intel literally took the word "Milking" to a whole new level! what node are they at now? 14+++++?

Aha I see, well since you had to change the whole platform - at least mobo and CPU - then you can go with the cheapest for sure, I picked AMD for platform long-expected run and B650E had all the whistles you might need for a while, PCIE 5, nVme 5, whatever 5 that you might want :D

The name attached to process node isn't so much a technical term as it is a marketing one.

"Driven by competitive marketing in the most recent decade," the researchers say, "this label has become decoupled from, and can be several times smaller than, the actual minimum gate length, while it also fails to convey other essential characteristics of the technology."

Intel is likely to be keen on adopting a new standard metric as it tends to come out on top in raw transistor density as it stands today. Intel reports a density of 100.76MTr/mm2 (mega-transistor per squared millimetre) for its 10nm process, while TSMC's 7nm process is said to land a little behind at 91.2MTr/mm2

Oof good luck…

Word of warning if you are populating the majority of the m2 slots (2_1, 2_2 and 2_4) you may want to avoid the newest BIOS from ASUS as people are having their m.2 drives disappear/dropout in windows.

Not to mention the numerous issues I’ve had with the wifi module randomly disabling itself or “device” not found and requiring full reboot to work again.

I hate to burst any excitement, but I’ve experienced nothing but trouble with this board, and heavy pcie utilization/lots of pci-e devices seem to cause a plethora of issues.

TPU Nation, good morning / evening whereever you are located :D who wants an update?
I just landed an amazing deal for the mobo, thanks to BF deals on Amazon, the currency is in AED but I will calculate it for you in USD to make it easier for you to follow.

The motherboard was originally for 350.94USD, it went down to 242.93USD!! I didn't think twice specially it was the last piece from that seller - *fingers crossed nothing is wrong with it lol!*

View attachment 320858

One the order was done, it went up spiking to 374.63USD

View attachment 320860

I am waiting on the deals for CPU and RAM; I have missed the CPU deal on MicroCenter for 288USD for 7800X3D but having high hopes now that from Amazon, gonna keep you posted.

Out and Over! :peace::toast:
Hopefully it works out. I ordered an Alienware Desktop in late august on one of those sales that seemed to good to be true. It said the exact same thing with just a couple left and then shot right back up to the normal price. I ended up receiving a pair of cheap shoes. It took 3 months of emailing and calling to get a refund even though the return arrived at Amazon on September 11th LOL.

Hi All,

I will be finally upgrading my PC, I will be picking 14700K as my CPU, I also picked This for the CPU to help with the heat a bit, my main issue is, which motherboard should I pick?

I am willing to have a MATX motherboard but I don't know about which chip should I go for? Z690, Z790 or wait for the new X iteration with a better WiFi and enhancements? or should I get a beefy B760? I don't want to spend a lot for an ASUS $$$$ motherboard with the prices going above 300$+, I won't be crazy OCing but I want a motherboard that will stick with me for a long time - I upgrade each 5-7 years maybe.
and which RAM kit do you recommend at which frequency? I am not so familiar with the sweet spot for Intel CPUs with DDR5 - I am coming from DDR4 3200MHz @ CL14 G.Skill kit, I think 32GB is the new standard now?

Thank you all for your help and recommendations in advance.
well, now there are even frames for AM5 too, a little money maker for them producers lmfao... have built 4 setups with 1700 and no issues without frame lmfao...

I don't mind that at all, Intel has to step-up their game a bit with power consumption, platform upgradability specially for CPUs and heat issues, if they fix this, we the users will have a lot of fun buying finer products at better prices.

Thank you for the note!! I have only two drives for now, and one good old HDD, I hope the mobo treats me well :D but we will see about the BIOS; I was planning to google it more specially on Reddit to check which one is the best since I will be running 7800X3D.

Thank you so much! I know it will be fun with AMD; In the recent years they got a lot of praise from good reviewers and clients in general, way to go Red Team! Blue team should take serious notes :D

That's why I trust Amazon with that! I had many returns with them and they have been nothing but helpful, usually they can return your cash as a gift card faster than returning it back to the original payment method so I am fine with that and congratulations on the new piece of tech you got! Mine is out for delivery already! YAY!

Glad we can draw a smile on your face mate xD, well for 8 or 9 bucks - cheaper than a tasteless coffee - you get a nice piece of metal that gives you better spreading of thermal paste and a fine-looking aesthetic view! who can say no to that?! xD and btw for LGA1700 the difference is real! I have posted an earlier video about it, maybe you should take a look at it :) LGA1700 thermals act so well as long as you manage the power draw or limit it, unless you find 100 degrees stressed CPU is fine in your case.

That is what I am saying buddy, it was from Amazon and fulfilled by Amazon Lol. It was absolutely insane. I even made sure with their customer support. The shipping labels even stated 42lbs but it came in the gray Amazon small plastic shipping bag. I can’t trust them anymore. The email they finally responded said they would refund me “as a one time courtesy” for the trouble. I’m like whhhaaaaaaaat a one time courtesy how can you even say that?! How was this MY fault!!? I sent them pictures of the shipping bag, label, shoes, my name, date, all that and it still took all of September and October of spamming their jeff@amazon email explaining the situation. The customer service chat and phone people would just hangup or end chat saying there was nothing they could do. The worst part was my return showing received on UPS’s end but on the Amazon app it still showed “on the way back” for over a month. Anyway, I still use Amazon but for small stuff.

Awesome! then AMD marketing team are gods!!

Not surprised!; I used to work with Amazon CS team so long ago, more than 16 years ago maybe, we always faced such issues and more! their policy is user-friendly + now when I buy many times I get empty bags, wrong items. Glad it got sorted out and you got refunded!

It's here! came well-protected.

5800X3D easily beats the 12700F in gaming though.

I'm about to upgrade to a 14700k / ddr5-7200 cl34 and I have it narrowed down to the Asus Strix Z790-H at $300 ($260 on sale) vs. the better value Gigabyte Elite X Wifi7 at $300

I am still to test it with the CPU and RAM, mostly end of this month, I hope!

5800X3D easily beats the 12700F in gaming though.

A friend of mine just did so on his good old Aorus B450 ITX Pro board, he is so happy with the outcome! coming from R5 2600. the results were worth it.

Congratulations in advance! Solid choices and that CPU should keep you happy for years to come :) and nothing beats a good sale on hardware!

I’d go Gigabyte personally at that price point, even MSI over current ASUS.

I had a huge tendency to get the Aorus B650E Master but nowhere to be found or at the price of a hefty Z790 Mobo! you would be lucky to find one for MSRP!

Out of the box sure, it's like less than 10% faster with a 4090 at 720p. With memory tuning, the 12700 probably wins
