They also made 478 with PCI-E and AGP. (in my photos case', the AGP slot is hidden under the 4870)

When performing memory test, be on a lookout for error reports, which would suggest that you are having corrupt RAM module(s). Sometimes you can experience random issues & data "blackouts" (missing files, corrupt data) due to hardware malfunction and/or incompatible BIOS settings.

You could also try reducing the amount of RAM to 512 or even 256MB (try to keep & group the same RAM modules, without mixing the brands and CL values) ... Otherwise, try resetting the BIOS to default settings & try again. Something is obviously going on with your hardware, otherwise that 440BX system of yours wouldn't have any issues with WinXP.
It passed 25+ hours of Memtest86+ w/ all tests selected & slight overclock
I will try out the other suggestions: setting the partition as "active" and formatting with something other than the built-in utility

Merry Christmas everyone!

Need to find out why the power switch on the front panel doesn't work, then polymod it. Was worth the long hunt. Also the fans need oiling... eh, lots of work but all worth it.

btw the NB heatsink came from an A8N-SLi that in turn received a Sapphire 9600 Pro heatsink w/ fan. Not sure who made it but I suspect Thermaltake.

I believe I've got one of those in the basement with a Voodoo2 8mb pci connected to it.

Fixed! It was Q23 being slightly chipped, swapped one from a dead Jetway 7BXAN. Now onto the recap :)

Indeed. I had it left from an A8N-SLi, which received a modified active HSF off a dead Sapphire 9550.
(modified because I had to swap in the 3 pin fan from an ASUS nForce 4 heatsink. Thankfully they both had the same screw spacing so it was a 1:1 fit.)

Moar BP6 action. Anyone know the best RHEL or CentOS version that will run on a maxed out BP6 w/ 2x 333MHz Celerons, 768MB of RAM, a 80GB WDC, GF4 Ti4200, SBLive CT4830?

I spent the whole day yesterday on my WinXP machine and I've got some great finds to share! :)

The Legacy Update project is a complete replacement for Windows Update on retro systems. It's an online service which mimics the original MS Update and even uses the familiar Internet Explorer interface. It supports Windows 2000 to 8.1. Finding the right updates, downloading and installing them is fully automatic. You can also review and select the updates that you want.

For XP it can be used to spoof the OS ID to that of Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 (if you pick that option during setup). This lets you install updates until April 2019, long after the official support ended in 2014. Now we can enjoy the most current WinXP installation possible!

It found 148 Embedded updates for my fully updated WinXP Home SP3 system. The whole process went on without a hitch and took 1 hour and 45 minutes with the components below:

And for the curious (and brave), Mypal68 appears to be the most current web browser for WinXP. It's an actively developed fork of Firefox 68, making it much newer than the last browser with official XP support, FF 52.9.0 ESR. Browsing with Mypal seems no different than using any modern browser. So far all sites look and navigate correctly, including the ones that were broken on 52.9. Mypal supports popular FF extensions, and fixes the irritating stutter that 52.9 often has.

It's amazing that a 23 year old operating system can still be used to browse the web normally. Posting this from the actual machine :rockout:

This needs to be Stickied or Pinned somewhere on TPU. Too bad there's not a Retro subsection instead of just this huge thread.

The Legacy Update is a standalone app. It's free to use and doesn't require registration. All it needs is a supported system and internet access.

Unless you mean OS installation media with all the updates slipstreamed? I'm sure it's been done, but I'm not aware of any such projects.

IIRC the Integral Edition XP images have all the updates + small installer for Firefox, dotNET Framework and a few other apps slipstreamed. Otherwise than those it's vanilla XP SP3, as far as my memory goes.
