The TPU UK Clubhouse

I love the 25 °C British summer, but anything above it is too much (unless you're on the beach of course).

same, I love the UK summers personally, except for the rare days in 2022 that were so damn hot i just was uncomfortable all day and night it was so hot in July 2022, bleh

20-25c is sub-optimal temperature for summer. Anything past that is unbareable in the UK to the point you just can't be bothered to do anything but sit and drink something cold and eat junk.

So, dogs are killing loads of sheep and other farm animals in the UK, and they want to use DNA testing kits to track down the animals doing it.

My guess is some of these dogs are just strays so it won't help anyway, but even in the event they are not, its not like there is exactly a large dog dna database with address location to draw from (they can't even keep track of the bully xl dog problem...) so my question is, why waste time training police and developing DNA test kits for dogs, when there are far simpler and cheaper solutions.

A) 3 solar panels in the corner of a field with a Jackery battery and a 360 degree specially designed camera with instant phone notification if it detects movement of an animal, farmer can then pop on some infrared vision goggles if its night, or sunglasses if its day, and neutralize the invasion, and save the sheep, and become hero of the farm of animals - glorious and mighty!

B) laser fence system that sends notification to phone if at a certain height only - the laser breaks contact, so the height of your average dog, that way rabbits won't trigger it.

C) bring back the old ways, and have protection dogs on site - and preferably train them to cuddle with the sheep, for the cute photo ops of it + on-site security at no extra charge! hell that beats Garda World sleeping on the job anyday!

D) I don't know, I feel like this is enough other options and cheaper than the DNA program, which I am not convinced will see results.

E) Contact your Australian/Canadian/Kiwi cousins and ask them how they protect their farm animals, since apparently 2000 years of animal husbandry the English have not figured out how yet

With what? A 1.5" blade pocket knife?

Sorry, that was uncalled for. I apologize.

I am pretty sure farmers in the UK having hunting rifles, and infrared or night vision goggles are cheap these days, cheaper than that DNA program anyway.

FYI, people in UK do have guns, its very rare, but for farming community in UK, from what I understand anyway most of them do have rifles on hand, and anyways its not needed, just set the laser fence system to make loud noises when it goes off, farmer lives far away anyway, that will scare the dogs most likely, and if the fence laser system still detects motion after x amount of minutes, then it can send an alarm to go in farmers phone or something.

be creative, I am not saying I have the answers, im saying use your brain folks.

On a more serious note, you have to bear in mind the population densities you are working with.

UK9.6m33m94k sq mi453.3
Australia 24.4m68m2.96m sq mi31.2
South Dakota 1.6m200k77.8k sq mi23.1

SD for scale ;)

I was joking :)

Also pardon my formatting, posting on mobile.

that's a good point, I'm sure they still have some tricks up their sleeve though. I'm constantly surprised by what other cultures do that make a lot of sense and I just completely overlooked something in my own life. I feel that applies to a lot of areas in life, including here

What is the % rate of americans having AC built into their houses? In the UK its mainly "modern" offices or shopping centres/large stores that will have AC.
Most of us in the UK will complain because we don't have AC to keep it manageable and our houses/home are design to retain heat.
Probably over 70% here in Canada. Which is not surprising since most homes are forced air for heat, so easy to add AC. Also, we are acclimatized to -20C for 6 months of the year, so +20C is warm enough for most people. They are nice for dehumidifying as well. I have one, even though it probably only runs maybe 30 days a year lol.

it was 37-38 celsius and super humid all last week where I live in USA, it was brutal, felt sick if I stayed outside too long. my window air conditioner unit was $150 at Walmart, and it only costs about $40 a month to run in this kind of weather, money well spent. My life would be hell without it, actually, I'd probably just go to the library and find a place to nap, they keep it really cold in there, and then just open my windows at night and read. Can kiss gaming goodbye without air con where I live.
It was 37C in the Govi when I used to work there in the summer............but rel humidty was very low, so wasn't that bad. I do miss the sun and blue skies though.

If they can survive the winters and wildlife here, they'll have no issue beating up a house dog lol.

Well depending on how often we get heatwave in July I may have to invest in a window air conditioner or something as myself and my partner work in the same office.
If it was just myself like it was a year ago then I would have just stuck with a fan.

Its ok folks, its coming home.(Insert England getting knocked out group stage in Euros 24)
The two F's (fishing and football) have always been completely and utterly alien to me, so I haven't got the faintest idea about the significance of what you just said. :ohwell:

I think the short summary is that Football we know today all started in England.
So a winning trophy and coming home to its "founding country", hence the whole "its coming home" motto whenever England participates in the Euros or World cup.

Fishing used to be a very big deal in the 50s, 60s and 70s. For some its about the sport. For others its about relaxation and getting out some place where there is peace and quiet. Although for most people these days it seems to be about dinner.... which is why i cant catch nothing from my local canal

::EDIT::

also - some may collect fishing lures and that becomes the new disease.

::EDIT 2::

Its 30'c in my room. I had to retreat. power everything down and come downstairs with the laptop.

I had to step outside into my garden around 9pm, it got too warm in the living room with me playing games on my laptop + my GF playing a game on PS5 + TV.
My hayfever flared up badly instantly.

I get that aspect very much! :) It's just that I don't need a several thousand GBP fishing gear to do that. Only a camping chair and a carton of beer.

Even around 9pm it was still 27-28'c in my room - I had windows open aswell. I had thought by shutting everything off that the temperature in my room would drop but it didnt drop at all. Maybe the insulation is a bit too good

it doesnt cost several thousand GBP for fishing gear. It can certainly scale that high but a few hundred GBP will easily sort you out if youre just after the basics/essentials to sort you out.

Also with most equipment. People dont tend to buy new equipment unless something is broken or they really really really need it which means that rods and reels can last decades

I had to have a fan on to fall asleep, luckily it was cool enough for the fan to be useful at the lowest speed. I thought I turned on the timer but I didn't, although I woke up at 4(been randomly waking up around this time past few days) something in the morning and saw it hasn't turned off so I got up to turn it off.

Exactly the same. Past two nights I've had the fan on a 3hr timer to get to sleep. How early I wake up depends on how loud the builders in this area are or how loud the birds are both of them start pretty early

I've not watched it, but if something is posted that makes a politician look cool or crap (fake or not), I'd say not. It's about the optics of boosting or lowering likeability and therefore influencing the gullible mind. Like what social media does.

I assume it's not the place to talk about Brexit !?

Political discussion is a no in this thread, try to keep things neutral and talk about "british" things or any good UK deals.
