Believe it or not, you can still call in with those keys and MS will activate on the phone and they lady/man will walk you through the process.
I did that during XP Days

I traded my probably illegitimate Win 7 key for a Win 10 key when MS was offering that trade way back when. I no longer have the key, but their 'new' key is tied to my email account. I usually don't have a problem with activation, but if I do I restore from a backup and it accepts my new board.

Outside of that, fully up to date and running smooth as glass.

I've got literal stacks on windows 7 disks with codes on them picked up from who knows where. Usually only takes 2-3 to find a working one.

I don't understand what you mean by this. Are you saying no one should use an MS account at all or that you should never use MS 2FA? The bug here is that the SMS was never sent.
What I'm saying is NEVER use a remote third party method to authenticate your PERSONAL PC account login. Ever. Also, never use a microsoft account to link your Windows key to. Ever.

I would try their business support, as it's the only number they seem to offer.
+44(0)344 800 2400
They only seem to offer chat support otherwise, which is really crap.
No idea why that isn't working for you though, as it works fine for me.
Yeah, Windows Support has become garbage..

What? Rufus is perfectly stable. What are you talking about?

I'm not providing any solution, it's just a comment. I'm telling this for your own good. If you don't want to use linux, I don't care. It's your choice!
I'm a fan of Linux too. But that comment has no place in this thread.

In my experience, keys from those sites have a shelf life.
Not here. I still have keys I bought years ago and they never fail to activate when needed.

That's how it was but Microsoft hijacked the pc when i was forced to sign in to get a windows key. I think im going to have to log my microsoft account in to its own windows account to get windows activated then make another local account to actually use.
Did you disconnect from the internet while on first boot? If not, clean format and try again

Yeah the BRs are always at it and that is exactly why...
never use a microsoft account to link your Windows key to. Ever.
Not even a Windows support issue. Just a front facing security problem.
Like what happens when all this stuff gets surreptitiously compro'd?
How do you get these weirdos to calm down?
One page of your login history ticks back to the previous month.
Mine is extremely lucky when the page ticks back to the previous day.
Even as a public person with a winded Internet history it should be better than this.
What? Rufus is perfectly stable. What are you talking about?
Not Rufus, UPDATES. Any time something gets typed or prompted to trigger IME, navigating Explorer or anything local with IME open, the pad and everything freezes and crashes.
Entire browser tabs lock up and everything.
Oh wait you only speak English.
1721033161633.png

Fixed. If this gets integrated in the next Win10 build I'm out. I'm done picking this and that to hide because Microsoft refuses to fix it.
At this point they're just funneling everyone into the Win11 catastrophe and I won't be joining them.

I love how this thread is filled with people claiming that a Microsoft account is somehow insecure because there are many malicious login attempts. If it was actually insecure the login attempts wouldn't be failing, you absolute bell ends.

I can't imagine what would happen if you ever looked at your router's "blocked connection attempt" logs... your heads would probably explode at the sheer quantity. "Oh no the internet is insecure REEEEEEE" yeah that, once again, is how it works.

From what I've read in this post, I'm glad I've never bothered with Secure Boot and TPM. Many of my older systems do not come with a TPM module on the motherboard or eTPM built into the CPU. I can still run Windows 10 Pro 32-bit on ancient Athlon 64 systems and I'm perfectly happy with Windows 10 Pro 64-bit on my 3800X and 7950X until October 2025.

To make swapping drives between motherboards and booting multiple OS versions on one PC, I disable motherboard Secure Boot and TPM before installing Windows. This also stops Microsoft from offering to update compatible systems to Windows 11. I know it's less secure, but it's a risk I'm prepared to take. I have a number of "sacrificial" machines and run new software in Hyper-V images or Windows Sandbox, before commiting to more important systems.

I use Rufus to modify the Microsoft Windows ISO and bypass the need for Secure Boot and TPM. When necessary, I install older versions of Windows 11 that still allow you to create a Local Account, instead of demanding a Microsoft Account. I want to choose the name of my main User Account, instead of some arbitrary account name chosen by Microsoft based on my email address. Yes I know I could create a Local Account at a later date after the initial installation with a Microsoft Account.

If you only have one computer and don't back up your data, disabling TPM and Secure Boot is probably not a good idea, but if you want to make life easier when swapping motherboards, use Rufus to knobble additional security.

So...back to windows xp you could not just swap hardware that wasn't directly the same model without windows raising a gripe. I'm not sure where you got the impression that "the same chipset" would be close enough to not need to do anything...because I don't ever remember a time where anything less than the same model was required. IE, a B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2 replaced by a B550 AORUS ELITE V2 would be enough for windows to throw errors and require reauthorization.

As such, the first thing you should do is get your registry key copied to somewhere on the physical hardware. This Tom's guide should help: Tom's Guide to getting windows key

Beyond that, their call center is usually hit or miss. I know you said that you have to wait 30 days...but maybe instead of that get some supervision. State bluntly that the hardware failed, you had to replace it, and the data behind this issue is critical to you. There's a lot that can be done to fix you one time, which is possible only if you don't piss off your support agent. Likewise, why not run an unauthorized copy of windows? 30 days without a key will not be fun, but it's better than having no data access.

Same chipset had nothing to do with it. I think win xp was reading in serial # and other device ID info to spot hardware changes.

Im getting nervous about having an online account with MS for my main win 11 rig. The offline tricks did not work during install like they did for my other 2 win 11 machines. I made an offline backup account but really dont want to be forced to ever use it.

So many companies have done a race to the bottom on consumer products now, its so sad to see. Companies like Microsoft have no excuse for it, its not like they wont survive by maintaining a decent support platform.

The last bit, reminds me of many years ago, where packets being sent to your internet connection, is normal, even when not expected. Unfortunately, that can cause an ethernet controller to randomly turn on the PC, with wake-on-LAN enabled. Saw that in my very-early-ADSL days (2007, IIRC) That feature existed since at least the early '00s, it looks like.
I of course didn't have the issue with 56K, which I had from very-late-2002 to May 17, 2007.

So many ways to fix it on youtube it's not funny

Not Rufus, UPDATES.
Ah, the quote you replied was in reference to Rufus.

Oh wait you only speak English.
Wait what? No I don't.

The insecurity people are referring to is the fact that WE USERS can get locked out of OUR OWN SYSTEMS(our PERSONAL property) on the whims of the short-sighted, narrow-minded NITWITS at microsoft.
